The Department of Barak Valley Development (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a department in the state government of Assam, India which is responsible for the overall development of the Barak Valley region in Assam. The department was created on 11 December 2024 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following a reshuffle of his cabinet.[1][2]
Kaushik Rai, a legislator from Barak Valley region, was appointed as the inaugural minister of the department following its creation.
History
The Department of Barak Valley Development was created on 11 December 2024, following a cabinet reshuffle carried out by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The department was created to accelerate development, improve infrastructure, and bring governance closer to the people of the Barak Valley region, comprising the districts of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi. The department also acts as a specialised administrative unit for the region.
Organisation
The department was created to focus on the unique developmental requirements of the three districts of Southern Assam, collectively known as the Barak Valley. It operates from the state capital in Dispur and includes officials posted in the department, as well as the mini secretariat at Silchar.
The department is responsible for the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes for the welfare and overall development of the people inhabiting the region. It enables and strengthens the administrative setup of the region to discharge its functions efficiently through policy support and interface with the state government and other departments. It also monitors the schemes and programmes implemented through the line departments in the region.
The department is also responsible for the identification of problems of the socio-economic backwardness of the people in the region for the improvement of their social, educational, and economic conditions.[3]
