The Department of Homeland Security Outstanding Unit Award is a United States government unit decoration established in 2021. It is an award of the Department of Homeland Security, presented by the Secretary of Homeland Security.

Creation and Issuance[edit]

Acting Secretary Chad Wolf created the award on January 11, 2021, and on the same day, presented it for the first time to the entire United States Coast Guard.[1][2][3]

Coast Guard members were previously eligible for awards of the Secretary of Transportation Outstanding Unit Award before the Coast Guard was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. The last award of such to Coast Guard members was for service in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

The Coast Guard first announced the award on January 25, 2021.[1] The service then followed up with a second announcement on February 7, 2022 stating further award details and eligibility. That announcement also stated that the creation and procurement of a ribbon with frame and civilian lapel pin is currently ongoing, and that a one-time issuance of ribbons and lapel pins will be distributed to the field for all recipients of the award. They anticipated having the first shipment of the new ribbons and pins by June.[4]

2021 Award to the United States Coast Guard[edit]

In its first and only issuance to date, Wolf presented the award to the entire United States Coast Guard on January 11, 2021 in "recognition of the Service’s courage, resourcefulness, and professionalism demonstrated from August 2017 to November 2020." The award recognized the Coast Guard for:[1]

  • Saving or assisting over 17,000 lives during four hurricane seasons.
  • Supporting DHS's Southwest Border activities and record at-sea drug interdictions.
  • Response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Displaying resiliency during the 35-day partial government lapse in fiscal year 2019 appropriations leaving Coast Guard women and men without pay during that time.
