The Derby Railway Engineering Society (DRES) is an independent learned society, headquartered in Derby, United Kingdom that aims to inform and educate likeminded people about railways not only from the United Kingdom but from around the world. The society also promotes networking within the industry and engagement with educational establishments.

History of the Society[edit]

The society was started in 1908 by Henry Fowler and was originally called the Midland Railway Engineering Club. The club was started following a visit to Sheffield by Henry Fowler where he and others realised there was a pressing requirement to share industry best practise within the railway community. Henry Fowler considered himself as the “Father of the Club”. [1]

The first meeting of the club was held on the 2nd October 1908 and subsequent meetings were held soon after to establish the remit and structure of the club. The first president of the club was Sir Earnest Paget. [2] [3].

The club met regularly until the outbreak of the first world war when it was suspended for 9 years and similarly it was suspended in 1939 at the outbreak of the second world war and did not resume its activities until May 1949.

By the mid 1950s, membership had grown to about 300 and it has stayed between 200 and 300 members to the present day.

At the time of British Rail privatisation in 1994, the title of the club was changed to the current Derby Railway Engineering Society to reflect the diverse range of commercially independent railway engineering, consultancy, analytical support services and a local train service provider, all of whom are based in and around Derby.

In 2008, the society celebrated its centenary. There was a reception at the Derby Council House along with lectures about the society.

By 2014, the society was considered to be one of the oldest railway societies in the world. [4]

Every year the society holds an annual dinner at the Hallmark Hotel (formerly the Midland Hotel) in Derby with notable guest speakers from the rail industry giving key note speeches. In 2019, the key note speech was given by Robin Gisby, chairman of London North Eastern Railway. [5]

The Society Today[edit]

The society organises lectures inclined towards engineering which affects the railways, undertakes visits to places of railway and broader engineering interest and hosts networking events to facilitate greater communication and awareness. It supports the concept of Continued Professional Development and issues CPD certificates.

The society works with numerous other organisations such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology, Derby College, Young Rail Professionals and iRail [6] to promote railway engineering as a career path.
