Derek E. Baird is a youth marketing strategist, scholar, and an author. His professional work centers around kids, tweens, and teens and understanding how they use social media, technology, consume content & use emerging technologies like virtual and augmented reality--now and in the future. His new book, 'The Gen Z Frequency,' is being published by Kogan Page Publishing in September 2018.
Industry & Consulting Work[edit]
Derek works on youth-focused projects in the areas of brand marketing, strategic communications, program development, kids privacy (public policy), digital and social interaction, creative development, cultural strategy, social impact and kidtech product development.
As a consultant, he’s worked with the Library of Congress, the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education and Labor, Yahoo! Teachers, Facebook, The Simon Wiesenthal Center, United Nations/UN-GAID to develop policies and programs focused on kids use of social media, privacy, digital and media literacy, online communities, social impact & education technology programs. In his role as Director of Consumer Product Development at The Walt Disney Company, Derek worked on social web experiences and earned a Disney Inventor Award for a patent related to social media and kids privacy COPPA.
Academic Work[edit]
Derek has worked as an adjunct professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education & Psychology (GSEP). His academic research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and magazines, both in the United States and internationally. He is also a regular contributor to Virtual Reality Pop Magazine where he focuses on how youth are using both augmented and virtual reality technologies.
