Dermala Inc., a spinout company from the University of California, San Diego, that uses the human microbiome to develop treatments for chronic skin diseases and skin conditions, such as acne, aging skin, and eczema. Dermala develops and markets topical treatments and probiotics that focus on correcting microbiome defects in both skin and gut and improving and maintaining skin health from the inside and outside of the human body.[1][2][3]

Dermala is currently led by CEO Lada Rasochova. Dermala’s products focus on eliminating bad bacteria and nourishing good bacteria in the skin and in the gut in order to promote healthy skin. In addition to topical treatments and probiotics, Dermala’s platform includes microbiome and metabolome analysis and screening capabilities that enable product personalization and Acne Tracker app that uses big data and machine learning to help users understand their skin problems, track treatment progress, and determine what behaviors should be avoided to prevent future acne outbreaks.[4][5]

Dermala was selected as the winner of the InnovateHER competition sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and Microsoft in 2015,[6] and the Cool Company by San Diego Venture Group in 2016.[7][8] In August 2017, Dermala was selected as one of 15 companies to be part of MetroConnect 2017, a World Trade Center (WTC) San Diego-run export assistance program meant to aid San Diego-based companies to boost their global reach by promoting their exports.[9]
