Derri Joseph Lewis (born 1997)[1] is a British composer of contemporary classical music. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and featured on television programmes for S4C.

Education

Lewis is an alumnus of King’s College London (MA), the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (BMus), and Zürich University of the Arts.[2][3]

Career

He has written multiple orchestral works, including Summit Blue for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales,[4] River Image and Joy for the Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra,[5][6] and Liberalia for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.[7]

In 2020, Lewis's duet for two voices and piano, "A Moment", was featured on mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston's CD, Isolation Songbook.[8] The duet was performed in performances at Boxgrove Choral Festival and at Oxford Lieder Festival.[9][10]

He has composed many pieces for choir: "Something Exciting", "Softly", and "Locus Iste" for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and "Gobaith", commissioned by Cowbridge Music Festival for the Choir of King's College London.[1][11]

Prizes and awards

Lewis has won multiple prizes and awards, including the National Centre for Early Music Young Composers Award,[12][13] the Welsh Music Guild's Paul Mealor Bursary for Student Composers.[3] and the Eifion Evans Memorial Prize from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.[14]

In 2022, his work Something Exciting was nominated for an Ivors Composer Award in the Community and Participation category.[15]

Albums

  • Isolation Songbook was released on Delphian Records in 2021, featuring Lewis's A Moment.[8]
  • NYCGB Young Composers 3 was released by NMC Recordings in 2022, including Lewis's Something Exciting and Softly.[16]
