Designspiration is an American web and mobile application company based in Los Angeles. It operates the eponymous design-centric curation website, where design community users share their inspiration.
History
Designspiration was created in 2010 by Shelby White, a visual designer and entrepreneur. He was looking for a way to help his fellow graphic design students at The Art Institute of Seattle find inspiration. White developed the site from scratch as a self-taught programmer.[1] Before the site was launched in December 2010, it had been completely rebuilt three times. There were 50,000 views on the first day it launched and it was viewed in 96 countries.[2]
Features
The Designspiration website is a community-driven image sharing tool for designers.[3] It operates as a web portal displaying architecture, typography, illustrations, and prints. Designspiration is considered an alternative to Pinterest, but geared towards designers[4] Compared to FFFFOUND!, the site offers developed search functionality and is a nudity-free environment.[5] Its concept was described as similar to other visual bookmarking apps but more Swiss-like and refined.[6]
To be able to search or browse images, users do not need to sign up. However, only members can upload images. New members are recruited by those who have already been invited, which serves to maintain the user base and the quality of uploads.[1] Designspiration has a mobile app and a desktop version.
