Graham William March (18 November 1980 - 23 May 2006) known by his stage names Desimal and Epidose was a Canadian drum and bass producer from Winnipeg, Manitoba[1]
Early Life
Desimal took piano lessons for almost 10 years starting at the age of 5 (1985-1995)[2] because his mother forced him to do so.[3] Desimal was never good at reading music though, such as notation. Instead, Desimal would always play things by ear, or just make stuff up. For example, if Desimal heard a song on the radio, he'd sit down at the piano and could play the whole thing. However, during lessons Desimal had trouble reading the song book.
This helped Desimal a lot with his production because he had a fairly good understanding of harmonics and what chords go together and which keys to use. The hardest part for Desimal was the technical side. He made techno and trance for a long time before he started producing Drum and Bass, but only when he stared making Drum and Bass, Desimal had to seriously look at the technical side of using software, learning synthesis, and all the mixing and mastering techniques.[2]
Production
Desimal started producing in 1993 on an amiga 1200 running OctaMED and used it for about 2 years. Desimal then upgraded to ProTracker, which had a few extra features. Once Desimal got a PC, he went straight for FastTracker 2 which he still used for all of his sequencing.
Desimal also tried different trackers, such as the Modplug Tracker, however he didn't really like the interface. He also tried quite a few different "new" trackers but again, he could never get into using a different interface. Now he mainly used FastTracker 2, Reaktor, Logic and Cubase for his productions.[4]
During this time, Desimal produced some breakbeat, trance and techno tracks. Desimal then started producing Drum and Bass in 1997 to 2006.
Personal Life
In 1999, Desimal was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. People had been wondering on how Graham felt while having Schizophrenia and what Schizophrenia itself was like. He explained that it’s like, 200 hundred channels of Television all on at once and you can’t turn them off, nothing but unwanted noise and thoughts.
In 2001 Graham had become a father to a boy named, Seth who is now running the official Graham March tribute site.[1]
Death
Desimal's last track "Afterlife" was a suicide note to his family and to all of his listeners. On May 23rd 2006, Desimal committed suicide[1] by possibly hanging himself in his room by his computer. [citation needed]
