Destiny: The Tale of Sonali and Amir, also known as Destiny Fairytale [1] is a children’s book written by Sonya Wadhera and Priya Wadhera and illustrated by Corey Wolfe, Carlos Valenti, Sonya Wadhera and Priya Wadhera.[2] It was published in 2015 by Double Infinity International Incorporated.[3]
Synopsis[edit]
The fairy tale takes place in India where the rulers of the country, King Dev and King Rajkumar, are concerned because an evil demon named Raakshasa is threatening to take over the country. Their royal advisor, Pundit, makes a prediction that the land will be saved by the two unborn heirs to the throne, Prince Amir and Princess Sonali, who are destined to defeat the demon Raakshasa. Hearing this prediction, Raakshasa places a curse on the Princess Sonali’s family so no one can defeat her. However, destiny has other plans for Princess Sonali and Prince Amir. Through a coincidental meeting later in life, Princess Sonali and Prince Amir end up going on an exciting journey together through India. This journey leads them through many historical places in the country such as the Ganges River, the Himalayas and the Valley of Flowers National Park where the two royals must work together to overcome obstacles. As the story comes to a close, there is one last battle where Princess Sonali and Prince Amir must face their destiny and defeat Raakshasa.[4]
Characters[edit]
Princess Sonali – the heir to the Kingdom of the North and daughter of King Rajkumar and Queen Rani. Princess Sonali is talented, strong and independent and is destined to defeat the demon and save India.
Prince Amir – the heir to the Kingdom of the South and son of King Dev and Queen Devi. Prince Amir is conceited but kind at heart, and is also destined to defeat the demon with Princess Sonali to save India.
Pia– A peacock who is Princess Sonali’s best friend and watches over Sonali as she grows up in the village.
Gauri– A cow who is Princess Sonali’s best friend and watches over Sonali as she grows up in the village.
Heer – A horse who is Prince Amir’s best friend and most loyal companion.
Pundit – The royal advisor to the Kings.
King Dev – The father of Prince Amir and husband of Queen Devi. He governs the Kingdom of the South and is best friends with King Rajkumar.
Queen Devi – The mother of Prince Amir and wife of King Dev. She lives in the Kingdom of the South.
King Rajkumar – The father of Princess Sonali and husband of Queen Rani. He governs the Kingdom of the North and is best friends with King Dev.
Queen Rani – The mother of Princess Sonali and wife of King Rajkumar. She lives in the Kingdom of the North.
Raakshasa – The evil demon who wants to take over India.
Themes[edit]
Destiny: The Tale of Sonali and Amir promotes diversity, equality and respect and the importance of believing in yourself. The moral of the story Destiny: The Tale of Sonali and Amir is that everyone is destined for greatness.[5]
It also displays elements of South Asian culture by featuring many places in India including the Ganges River, the Himalayas and the Valley of Flowers National Park. It also incorporates many important symbols from Indian culture including celebrations like Diwali, clothing like the sari, lenghas, turbans and bindis and activities like yoga and meditation.
