Dethan Punalur (born 1954) is an Indian wildlife photographer, working in the Nilgiri Mountains of south India.

Early life

Dethan Punalur was born as V. Devadethan in Muthukulam, Alappuzha District, Kerala, India, in 1954 as the son of V.K. Vasu and C.K. Omana. He completed his schooling at the Muthukulam High School. He did his graduation in Fine Arts from the Raja Ravivarma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikkara, in the field of painting and sculpture with a scholarship. He also took a certificate course from Photo Lux institute. From there he moved into providing illustrations and cartooning for newspapers and magazines. He then moved on to photographs for cover pages for periodicals. He also worked commercially as an artist and photographer. He then became a member of the India International Photographic Council (IIPC). In the meantime, he also conducted exhibitions of his pictures on 32 occasions in many places, and also conducted photography classes at many photography clubs and camps.

Career

Punalur now resides at Coonoor, Nilgiris, with his family having lived in the Nilgiris for 38 years. He works as a full-time photographer and runs a studio named Dethan's Studio there. His experience in this field spans over 41 years. He is the president of the Coonoor Photo and Video Association and the patron of the Kairali Kerala Samajam, Aravankadu. He is a contributor to Getty Images; the Ooty correspondent of Photo Wide Photo magazine; and a special correspondent of Cinema Mangalam Weekly.

Punalur has published one book, entitled Guru: an Album, containing photographs of the great philosopher Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati, who lived in Ooty until his demise in 1999. Punalur followed the guru for nearly two decades and clicked several of his rare, pious moments.

He has written more than 61 articles on photography after conducting his own experiments. His chief areas of interest are nature, wildlife, medical, macro, and action photography. Currently, he works on showing usual subjects in unusual visuals. He also writes on various subjects in many periodicals.

Punalur uses or has used a Canon 5D mark III, Canon 7D, Canon EOS 400D and 300D, Canon T70, Olympus OM 2, and Zenith 122.
