Deutsch LA is a Los Angeles, CA-based advertising agency that was opened by New York City-based Deutsch Inc. in 1995. It became a standalone agency in October 2020 when parent Deutsch split into two agencies, Deutsch LA and Deutsch NY.[3] Its CEO is Kim Getty.
History[edit]
Deutsch LA's first office was opened in 1995 by parent Deutsch, Inc., an agency with roots going back to 1969.[1]
In Fall of 2014, Deutsch LA launched its DLAtino practice, focused on Hispanic marketing.[4]
In 2015, former Deutsch LA CEO Mike Sheldon was promoted to Deutsch North America CEO and chairman, after joining in 1997.[5] Kim Getty became president of Deutsch LA, after joining the agency in 2003.[1]
In 2016, Deutsch LA launched a branded entertainment department, DeutschMusic, signing Grammy-nominated artist Charlie Puth.[2]
In October 2020, Deutsch Inc. split into two separate corporate entities and began doing business as Deutsch LA and Deutsch NY.[3]
Operations[edit]
Deutsch LA is based in the Silicon Beach area of Playa Vista, California. The agency also operates Steelhead Productions, a video production company that creates television commercials, digital branded content, and episodic entertainment.[6]
The agency focuses on entertainment, tech and culture.[3]
Some of its notable clients have included Taco Bell, PetSmart and Volkswagen.[7][8] In 2022, NerdWallet hired Deutsh LA as its lead creative agency.[9]
Notable campaigns[edit]
AdWeek picked the Deutsch commercial, "The Force", for Volkswagen AG, as the top commercial of 2011. The ad featured a child in a Darth Vader suit.[10] The Association of Independent Commercial Producers also listed that commercial as one of the top 3 of 2011 in several categories.[11] The spot was nominated for an Emmy Award.[12]
Deutsch produced two live commercials for client Target Corporation during the Grammys alongside musicians Imagine Dragons[13] and Gwen Stefani,[14] marking the first live commercial-break concert[15] and the first live music video[16] respectively.
Deutsch created TacoBot, an artificially intelligent chatbot for placing orders and specifying pickup at local Taco Bell restaurants via Slack.[17][18]
Awards[edit]
In 2012, while still part of Deutsch, Inc, Deutsch LA won advertising organization The One Club's Gold Pencil award in the Interactive category for its spot Michael, promoting Sony's PlayStation 3.[19] In 2013, the agency was named by Ad Age as its Creativity Innovator of the Year.[20]
