ORG Music is an American independent record label which specializes in vinyl releases and reissues, in addition to a roster of active artists with releases across all formats.[1] The label releases music from a wide variety of genres and eras, with a focus on jazz, punk, alternative, and experimental music. ORG Music is operated out of Los Angeles, California, with a branch also based in the Washington D.C. area.

History[edit]

ORG Music was established in 2009 by owners Eric Astor, Jeff Bowers, and Manish Naik.[1] Bowers had previously owned a stake in the similarly named reissue label Original Recordings Group. Upon parting ways with Original Recordings Group, he brought licenses for vinyl rights to titles by alternative groups like Nirvana and Sonic Youth to the newly formed ORG Music.

Jeff Bowers left ORG Music in 2013 to form the now-defunct label Federal Prism with Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio.[2]

Artists who have issued releases on the label include Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin' Wolf, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Weather Report, Mike Watt, Mia Doi Todd, Marion Brown, The Replacements, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Helmet, Porno for Pyros, Suicidal Tendencies, Ben Folds, Sly & The Family Stone, Tav Falco, and Qui (band) amongst others.[1][3][4]

The label continues to release new music and promote new artists, including Micah Nelson, Sunny War, and John Salvage.[5][6] ORG Music was selected by seminal hardcore punk bad Bad Brains to reissue their remastered back catalogue with new packaging and liner notes.[7]
