Deutsche Spatzenschule Melbourne is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a German native speaking program within Toorak Primary School in Toorak, a south eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[1] The Spatzenschule was founded and is run by parents and is open to students who are already proficient in the German language.[2]
Organisation[edit]
The Spatzenschule was established in 2007 as a not-for-profit, community organization run by students' parents. The program is hosted by the Toorak Primary School located in Toorak, Melbourne, at which the students (gradees prep to 6) must be enrolled.[3] The Spatzenschule offers two programs, one for children in grades prep to 6 ("Spatzenprogram") and one for children in grades 7 - 11 ("Falkenprogram").[4] A prerequisite for enrollment in the program is a solid knowledge of the German language.[5]
School model[edit]
Spatzenschule students are completely integrated into Toorak Primary School's classes. On two days per week, students leave those classes early to participate in the Spatzenschule program.[2] The Spatzenschule is a German immersion program completely delivered in German, by two native speakers with teaching degrees from Germany. The program teaches fundamental German language skills such as reading, writing and oral expression, following curricula from Germany, and enables students to learn about German culture.[6] By being fully integrated in an Australian school where classes are taught in English, students of the Spatzenschule are exposed to a pioneering form of bilingual education.[7]
