Devayush Chowdhary is an Indian-American filmmaker. He is best known for independently writing, directing, and co-producing his debut feature Adda[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] (2019), which starred screen thespians Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabyasachi Chakraborty in pivotal roles and released in India on 13 September 2019.[10]
Early life
Devayush was born in Kolkata, India on 5 December 1989. His stepfather is a doctor and his mother an educationist. His biological father is a businessman. He is the youngest of four siblings and did his schooling at Don Bosco School, Park Circus and Danville High School (Illinois).
Devayush studied filmmaking at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and graduated in 2010.
Career
After graduating from NYU, Chowdhary went to India to explore his fascination with Bollywood and assisted notable filmmakers like Rituporno Ghosh, Kaushik Ganguly, Anurag Kashyap[11], Birsa Dasgupta, and Ribhu Dasgupta[12][13]. In 2014, he turned to screenwriting, writing several popular shows on Indian Television like Emotional Atyachar[14] and did research and development for the Radhika Apte starrer horror flick Phobia (2016 film)[15][16].
His short film, The Others,[17] which he made while still a film student at NYU, was the opening film of the shorts section at the 19th Kolkata International Film Festival and also notably screened at New York's Anthology Film Archives.
In 2017, Devayush moved to Kolkata, the city of his birth, to start work on his debut feature film Adda[18]. Adda was released in the fall of 2019 to generally positive reviews.[19]
Devayush also dabbles in film criticism and journalism from time to time and has written as a guest columnist for several print and online publications such as Highonfilms.com[20], The Citizen.in[21], and The Telegraph (Kolkata)'s entertainment daily 'T2'.
Styles, themes, and influences
Devayush's works often deal with issues of women's safety, sexual assault, and domestic violence. These are recurring themes in his works.
The director has stated that Satyajit Ray's Sonar Kella and Mani Ratnam's Yuva were the two films that got him interested in filmmaking, but his work often reflects the kind of laissez-faire approach to filmmaking as seen in the French New Wave and American independent cinema of the 1970s and 1980s.
His debut feature Adda polarised critics during its theatrical release, with The Times of India criticising its "certain sense of superficiality in its rather deep monologues or exchanges."[22] Others, like Shoma A. Chatterji of The Statesman (India), called the film "An accomplished debut"[23], which "suggests more than it tells, and that is what makes it quite enjoyable to watch."
