Devendra Maalviya (also known as Devendra Malviya) is an Indian film director, writer, lyricist, actor and producer. He is best known for directing "2020 Delhi"[1], India's first one-shot feature film, and for his contributions to social campaigns such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. [2][3]

Early Life and Education

Devendra Maalviya was born on 20 august 1978 to a Hindu family in Dedtalai, Madhya Pradesh. He studied up to 10th grade at the Government School in Dedtalai and completed higher secondary at Raichand Nagda School, Khandwa. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from P.M.B. Gujarati Science College, Indore.

Career

Devendra Maalviya began his career by working on advertisement films and documentary projects, where he honed his skills in visual storytelling and direction. His early work in these formats allowed him to explore diverse subjects and understand the nuances of human behavior and social issues.[4]

Building upon this foundation, Maalviya transitioned into feature filmmaking with the political drama 2020 DEHLI, scheduled for release in 2025. In this project, he took on multiple roles — as director, writer, and producer — showcasing his multifaceted talent. The film explores the socio-political landscape of contemporary India, focusing on the tensions and transformations within the democratic system. 2020 DEHLI has garnered early attention for its bold theme and realistic narrative approach.[5]

Controversy

Congress Allegations: In early 2025, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, spokesperson for the Indian National Congress, accused Devendra Maalviya of attempting to influence the Delhi assembly elections through the release of 2020 DEHLI. In an official press conference, Singhvi alleged links between Maalviya, the BJP, and the RSS, and claimed that the film portrayed the Muslim community in a negative light. A complaint was submitted to the Election Commission demanding the film's release be halted. Devendra Maalviya responded, challenging Singhvi to provide evidence and questioning how conclusions could be drawn without viewing the film in full.[6]

Sharjeel Imam – Petition to Stay Release of 2020 DEHLI In January 2025, Sharjeel Imam and others filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking to halt the release of 2020 DEHLI, claiming the trailer misrepresented Imam as the mastermind of the 2020 riots, potentially prejudicing legal proceedings.[7]

Mehmood Pracha – Representation in Petition Advocate Mehmood Pracha represented the petitioners, arguing that the trailer violated the Cinematograph Act by portraying accused individuals in a prejudicial manner.

Court Verdict: In late January 2025, the Delhi High Court refused to stay the film’s release, deeming the petitions premature since the film had not yet been certified by the CBFC. The Court noted the trailer’s disclaimer and allowed the certification process to proceed.[8][9]
