DICE: The Cube That Changes Everything or simply Dice (stylized as DICE) (Hangul: 다이스; RR: Daiseu) is a webtoon written and illustrated by Hyunseok Yun. It was first posted on Naver Webtoon on 18 December 2013, and has been ongoing ever since. It was among the first webtoons to receive an English translation at the launch of Line Webtoon in July 2014.

Plot

The story revolves around a timid teenager named Dongtae who is often bullied by his classmates for being weak and short. As things goes on like this, one day he meets a new transfer student named Taebin, Dongtae gets to use the powerful cubes called dice through Taebin, which when rolled, the total amount of pips obtained can be exchanged for strength, beauty, height, weight, intelligence and health. Once the dice are rolled, the person becomes a Dicer. The dice can be obtained by completing the quests given by X, the Game Master. Dongtae helps another weak but intelligent student named Byungchul by giving him his dice, he uses the dice and learns all the secrets the dice holds, X tricks him into a quest in which Byungchul falls from the school building and dies, the dice that he earned and the dice he used becomes reusable since its user died. The students of the school picks Byungchul's dice which was scattered all around his corpse. In the following days, many students becomes Dicers and X starts giving dangerous quests just for his amusement. Eventually the dicers becomes aggressive and selfish. They doesn't even hesitate to kill a person just for obtaining dice. The story continues with Dongtae along with his friends Mio, Eunju and other who tries to put an end to X's game.

Characters

Main Characters

Dongtae

Dongtae is the main protagonist of Dice. He starts off as a timid kid with bottom of the barrel rankings on every aspect of his life. Whether it be looks, intelligence, height, it was like Dongtae rolled "ones" for all of his attributes. Constantly bullied and incapable of approaching his crush Eunju, Dongtae is rescued from a spiral of despair by becoming a Dicer. His main goal is to get the final dice and make a world fair for all. Prior to becoming a Dicer, Dongtae was rather short and scrawny with a sad/depressed look on his face. He had freckles and very vivid dark circles under his eyes. With all the characteristics of the classic "wimp", he was an easy target for all the bullies in his class. After becoming a Dicer, Dongtae invested many points on his physical attributes and became a tall, handsome, athletic young man with great dexterity and nimbleness. The freckles were the first to go, but he retained his "panda eyes", although less prominent, as his trademark as a character in this series.

Ahn Yeohwe (a.k.a.) Mio

Ahn Yeohwe, also known as Mio, is one of Dongtae's classmates that became a Dicer in the chaos of Byungchul's death. Prior to becoming a Dicer, Mio was very obese, had pimples, and wore glasses. Her hair was dark brown, relatively in a bob-cut style haircut and she had a huge piggish nose. Because of this, her classmates often called her P.G.P, meaning The Pig with Glasses and Pimples. She was also called an "Orc Scholar". After Byungchul's incident and death, Mio took one of the dice, and which made her a Dicer. She is one of only few embodied dicers who changed their overall appearance beyond recognition, like Taebin's transformation. Currently, she has a slim, elegant body, flawlessly smooth skin with hot pink-colored bob cut hair, and big, clear green eyes. She has slightly cat-like in appearance, as described by a guy trying to hit on her.

Dong Taebin (a.k.a.) Taebin

Dong Taebin, or primarily known as Taebin (and thus a near-homonym of the protagonist), is a main character in the series and was Eunju's ex-boyfriend. A transfer student to Dongtae's school and classroom, and sitting next to him, Taebin is a Dicer and was initially his desk neighbor's mirror opposite: a full "number 6" through and through, he quickly became one of the most popular students in the school through his looks, physical prowess and smarts. He had been made a Dicer by Mooyoung.

Eunju

Eunju is a female protagonist of the series and Dongtae's former love interest. In terms of dice points, she would be a full "six". Initially depicted by Dongtae and everyone that she is the prettiest girl in the whole school, it is often overlooked that Eunju never saw herself as someone special. She was originally the only main character who was not a Dicer. However, after declining the invitation from X, the events spiraled further down to the point where all she could do was watch helplessly as innocent casualties grow in number, and the tragic ends that befell her classmates, one after the next. Having seen them lose their humanity, compassion and sensibility for the sake of getting their desires fulfilled and, ultimately, for X's entertainment, it finally dawns upon her that the only way to save what's left of the remaining people she knows, was to win the final Dice and change the world. Much to X's excitement and long awaited anticipation, she finally gives in. Becoming an A-ranker dicer immediately upon joining the game. Thus, making her the only unique Dicer — as opposed from the rest who has no materialistic desire to use the Dice to edit herself. Possessing only one single powerful desire to eliminate dice from the world.

X

X is a main antagonist of the series and the supplier of both Dice and quests. Acting as a Game Master, he decides quest content, which quests will be given to whom and how many, when and to whom Golden Die quests will be given, and the rules of the game. A mysterious entity with abilities that seem supernatural, X spends his time amusing himself with Dicers and their constant pursuit of Dice. Even he have to follow the rules, though. X can only dispense quests to people who have desires to fuel them, the number and content being determined by the intensity and nature of said desires.

Other A-Rankers

Mooyoung

Mooyoung is a Dicer and was Taebin's mentor, the person who gave him his first Dice. He seems to currently be the most powerful A Ranker. He killed most of all other rankers in Taebin's former school (excluding Taebin and Dawn). His motivations have something to do with the "Last Dice" and the connection between him and X. When X asked the final die to have someone to play with forever, along with him being split in two, Mooyoung was summoned before X.

Che-Hyun

Che-Hyun is a student in the protagonists' school, though one year younger than they. He remains his A-Ranker Skill hidden until the final battle royal, though he has shown a co-operative stance towards Dongtae so far. Che-Hyun was originally very obese, and as a Dicer has become thin and well-proportioned, but other than that his looks remain unchanged: he is a blond, short-haired kid with grey eyes. He was taller than Dongtae originally, but is now shorter. He always wears a red jacket. He seems to have remained quite the heavy eater, but his metabolic rate prevents him from becoming fat again.

Suksoon Jung

Suksoon Jung is a student of First Private High and also an A-rank Dicer. Suksoon has a tall well built frame. His hair has a slightly blue tinge which persists through the series. He is normally seen wearing a school uniform but can also be seen in sweatshirts and other outfits.

Dawn (Doeun in English)

Dawn is one of the original group members Taebin and Mooyoung gave Dice to in the past. Dawn was the group meeting organizer and 3rd Dicer of the group after Mooyoung and Taebin, making her one of the longest Dicers so far. Sometime in the past she became an A-Ranker, acquiring the ability of levitation. After Mooyoung attacked the group, killing most of them in order to obtain their A-Rank Dice, she was presumed to be dead. However she is revealed to having survived the ordeal and now carries a deep grudge with him. The LINE Webtoon official English translation spelled her name as Doeun.

Byungcheol

Byungcheol was a member of the central cast of characters. A bookworm, meek teenager who was the closest thing Dongtae had for a friend, he replaced him as the classroom loser when Dongtae became a Dicer. After becoming one himself, he becomes violent and unstable, and is finally killed by X. Despite being a teenager, Byungchul's facial features were strangely old. He had receding black hair and a thin, pale face. He wore glasses and his physical constitution was similar to Dongtae's before he became a Dicer: thin and short.

Hyunjo Shin

Hyunjo Shin is a classmate of the main characters and used to be the chief bully of that class. His main victim used to be Dongtae and afterwards Byungchul. Other than Eunju, he is the only character of some importance who is not a Dicer, and this has had consequences in his role in the story: from a feared leader who used violence towards his victims, he was reduced to a wimp as the story progressed.
