Diego Sanchez (artist)

Diego Sanchez (born 1963 in Bogota, Colombia), is a practicing artist and chairman of the visual arts department at St. Catherine's School, a private, independent Episcopal diocesan school for girls in Richmond, Virginia.[1][2] He is married to Jennifer Garvin-Sanchez, from Arlington, Virginia.

Exhibitions[edit]

Sanchez has exhibited at Main Art in Richmond, Virginia,[3] at Hunt Gallery at Mary Baldwin College,[4] Quirk Gallery in Richmond,[5][6] Artspace in Richmond, Virginia,[7] 1708 Gallery,[8] Flippo Gallery at Randolph-Macon College,[9], Art6[10] and VisArts. His work has been shown in Peru, Italy, Belgium, Colombia, and France.[11]

Honors, awards, and collections[edit]

Sanchez was the first recipient of the Theresa Pollack Artist of the Year Award. In 2011 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Visual Art Center of Richmond.[12] His work is in several major collections: Sidney and Frances Lewis, Charlotte Minor, Media General, First Market Bank, Capital One, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Markel Corporation, and Phillip Morris.[13] In 2019, one of his paintings, Composition #76, was acquired by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for its permanent collection.[14][15] In 2018, Sanchez an award from the Virginia Commission for the Arts 50 for 50 Award. This award was presented to 50 Virginia artists or institutions over 50 years, from 1968 to 2018, who have contributed to the arts in Virginia. Four visual artists were chosen for the award for outstanding artists over 50 years, P. Buckley Moss, Carlton Abbott, Diego Sanchez, and Sally Mann.[16]

Education[edit]

In 1988, he received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and in 1990 he earned his MFA in Painting and Printmaking, also from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Teaching[edit]

In addition to his teaching at St.Catherine's, he has served on the faculties of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School,[17] Virginia Union University,[18][better source needed] The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (formerly the Hand Workshop), and Nimrod Hall, an artist's retreat in Millboro, Virginia.[19]
