Dimitri Ginev (*3rd July 1956 in Varna-†5th June 2021 in Sophia) is a professor of history of discourses in cultural studies.

Career

Dimitri Ginev habilitated at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1987 with a thesis on the hermeneutics aspects of post-empirical philosophy of science. He had been professor of the History of Discourses in Cultural Studies at Sofia University since 1989.[1] He has made significant contributions to a hermeneutic philosophy of science, an ontological conception of social practices and an interpretive theory of cultural forms of life.[2] In 1990, he was a visiting Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh.[3] In the 1990s, Ginev participated in various research projects conducted at the University of Marburg, the University of Düsseldorf, and the Ruhr University Bochum. He was also a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Humboldt University of Berlin, a Fulbright Scholar at the Catholic University of America, and a Senior Fellow of the Zukunftskolleg at the University of Konstanz.[4] In 1992, Ginev founded the international journal Studia Culturologica.[5]

Work

Ginev’s work not only reveals the basic features of hermeneutic philosophizing,[6] but it also aims at mediating between Continental and Analytic ways of thinking.[7] The goal of this mediation is to initiate a gradual change of the established metaphysico-epistemological identities of the sciences in favor of ones shaped by the interpretative reflexivity of the research processes. In sum, the path leads from a hermeneutic theory of science via an ontological conception of social practices to an interpretative theory of cultural forms of life. Ginev’s hermeneutic realism states that the facticity of scientific practices cannot be separated from the objectified factuality.[8] From this perspective, reality – revealed by research practices – manifests itself in the continuous pre-structuring of factual structures.

Along with that, Dimitri Ginev also worked on a hermeneutic version of social theory, arguing that a reality sui generis should be attributed to interrelated social practices. In his earlier work, through investigation into the genesis of cultural forms of life, he justifies the peculiarity of the social as an interweaving of practices.[9]  The concept of the political elaborated by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe plays an important role in shaping this view. His later studies on the social theory of social practices are oriented more towards practice theory.[10]  Criticizing the excessive attachment of the theoretical consideration of social practices to the problem of corporeality, Ginev focuses his approach instead on expanding the concept of facticity. The respective theory of the narrativity of social practices, related to Ginev's reading of Wilhelm Schapp's philosophy, complements his amplified concept of facticity.[11] The study of the facticity of the social requires double hermeneutics, which results from the interaction of a methodological interpretation and a phenomenological constitution theory.[12]
