Dionisije Ugarković (died 1716) was the Serbian Orthodox bishop of Kostajnica from 1713 to 1716, with the archbishop's chair in the Komogovina monastery. [1]

Previous service[edit]

Dionisije Ugarković comes from the village of Radišić in Zrinsko polje. [2] At the beginning of the 18th century, he was one of the direct associates of Bishop Atanasij Ljubojević in the Zrinopolje area around the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Komogovina (Banija). After the famous Krušedol Council (1708), Emperor Joseph I recognized the diocesan jurisdiction of Bishop Atanasij only in the areas of Zrinopolje, Lika, and Krbava, as a result of which after the bishop's death (1712) the survival of a single diocese for entire Upper Krajina was questioned. [3]

Episcopal service[edit]

At the church-people's assembly held in 1713 in Sremski Karlovci, a decision was made to divide Gornja Krajina into two special dioceses: Kostajnička, which included Zrinopolje, Lika and Krbava, and Gornja Karlovačka for the pre-war area of the Karlovac general around the monastery of Gomirje. Dionisija Ugarković was elected Bishop of Kostajnica, while Danilo Ljubotina was elected Bishop of Gornji Karlovac. Both received an imperial certificate during the same year. [4]

As Bishop of Kostajnica, who succeeded Atanas Ljubović, Dionisija Ugarković dined in the monastery of Komogovina. However, since the main place in the area of his diocese was Kostajnica, even then the question arose about the transfer of the diocesan administration to this city. An additional difficulty was that the northern part of the diocesan area (Banija) was geographically separated from the southern part (Lika and Krbava). Although he did not live long, Bishop Dionisija gained merits for the original organization of this Serbian diocese during his three-year administration.
