Dipu Number Two (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a novel by Bangladeshi author Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, published in 1984.

Synopsis

Dipu, a twelve-year-old boy, lives with his father, a government officer whose transferable job brings them to a scenic town. Dipu quickly adapts to his new environment and school, where he makes several friends but immediately clashes with Tarique, a school bully. Tarique attempts to intimidate Dipu through various means, including physical assault, but Dipu does not report these incidents and considers confronting him directly. A minor incident atop a water tank later alters Dipu's perception of Tarique.

Dipu subsequently learns that his mother, previously believed to be deceased, had moved to the United States during his childhood and is visiting Bangladesh for a brief period. He travels to Dhaka to meet her, and their short encounter influences his outlook on life. Following this, Dipu visits Tarique and becomes aware of challenges in Tarique's personal life, including his mother's mental illness. Dipu also shares information about his own mother, which strengthens the friendship between the two boys.

Tarique reveals a secret cavern containing antique sculptures, which Dipu later informs his classmates about. During a nighttime visit to the cavern, Dipu, Tarique, and other boys discover a gang of smugglers involved in illegal antiquities trading. Using their intelligence and courage, they apprehend the gang and are subsequently recognized for their actions.

Dipu's experiences in the town conclude with the end of his father's posting, leaving him with lasting memories of his time there.

Adaptations

The novel was adapted into a film in 1996 titled Dipu Number Two.
