Discovery Community College is a private college originally founded in Campbell River, British Columbia in 1996.
The college has 8 total campuses, including: Courtenay, Kelowna, Maple Ridge, Nanaimo, Prince George, Surrey, and Williams Lake.
In March 2011, the college inaugurated its chairside dental assistant program.[1]
Controversy
In 2019, Discovery Community College was found by British Columbia’s Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) to have engaged in “false or misleading” advertising of its Police Foundations program.[2] The college had promoted the $20,000 course as a pathway to a career in law enforcement, despite graduates receiving only a basic security certificate available elsewhere for a fraction of the cost.[2] Multiple students filed lawsuits alleging they had been misled or “duped” into enrolling.[2] Although the college denied wrongdoing, it quietly settled the claims and amended its promotional materials after the PTIB intervened.[3] The province’s tuition protection fund also ruled that at least one student had indeed been misled.[2]
