Disenfranchisement or disfranchisement is removing rights from people, such as the right to vote, through law (mean or unfair rules) or through discriminatory (mean or unfair treatment of different people) actions.

Based on gender[edit]

Women were disfranchised. In most countries, women now have voting rights.

Based on age[edit]

Most countries have a minimum voting age. Citizens younger than this age are disfranchised. This voting age is usually 18, although other countries have this age as 16 or 21.
