Divyanshu Bhardwaj is a former president of the Patna University Student Union (PUSU) who won the election as an Independent candidate. He is also a former leader of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right wing student organization considered to be close to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He is currently a member of Janata Dal (United).[2]
Divyanshu Bhardwaj was born in Motihari and brought up in the village of Mehsi block in East Champaran district. He hails from a middle class family and his father works in an insurance company and mother is a housewife. His family has been a traditional supporter of BJP. He has studied from DAV Public School Motihari. During his school days he has been very active in sports and cultural activities.[3][4]
During his studies in Patna University, Divyanshu was elected as the president of the Patna Univeristy Student Union (PUSU) as an Independent candidate.[5] Divyanshu got 1862 votes whereas Jan Adhikar Party's candidate got 1750 votes.[6] Before the election, he was member of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad but he was denied the ticket to contest for president post.[7] He resigned from ABVP and contested independently, to finally win the election. This is only the second time when an independent won PUSU president post. Divyanshu's election as president was declared invalid on charges of furnishing wrong affidavits and declarations while filing their nomination papers.[8] The issue went to Patna High Court and Divyanshu's candidature was restored.[9] [10] After taking oath of the president Divyanshu organized "Chhatra Samvad" program in Patna and was successful in getting approved a bus service for Patna University.[11][12]
After the end of his tenure he joined Janta Dal (United) in presence of Prashant Kishore[13] and did canvasing for "Chhatra JDU candidate Mohit Prakash in next years election.[14] Divyanshu was attacked[15] allegedly by ABVP members in front of Patna High Court while he was campaigning for JDU candidate.[16] He is currently a member of JDU and works in coordination with Prashant Kishore for mobilizing youth in Bihar politics.
