Doctor Mew is a series of fan art pieces by American comics artist, fan artist and scientific illustrator Jenny Parks. It depicts thirteen incarnations of the Doctor from Doctor Who as cats.

Background

"This new image of cat Doctors, or 'Doctor Mew,' as I started to call it, gained a lot more attention than I was prepared for. People responded very positively to it, and it wasn't until after the success of that image that I decided to tackle some other fandoms like the Avengers, Sherlock, and most recently Star Trek."

 —Jenny Parks[1]

Parks started drawing cat versions of people since about age 11 or 12.[1][2] Around 12, she loved The Phantom of the Opera and had a running gag about The Phantom of the Cats. Eventually, she drew the characters as cats.[3] A few years later, Parks became obsessed with the British television series Doctor Who. Around 2008, Parks began drawing more realistic Doctor Who cats.[2]

Parks has a Bachelor's degree (BFA) in Illustration from the California College of Arts and a graduate degree in scientific illustration from the UC Santa Cruz.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] In a CNET interview with Bonnie Burton, Parks said "Years later, after I graduated from art school, I decided to have some fun and re-draw cat versions of all of the Doctors, which I first did when I was in high school, and was also years before the new series of Doctor Who started in 2005."[1] Previously, Parks drew wildlife like big cats, birds, dinosaurs, fruit bats, insects, and plants.[7] Her work can be found via iPhone apps for the National Parks service.[9]

Doctor Mew began as a series of illustrations in 2010.[13] It was drawn and painted digitally via Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop.[3][9][14] Parks said her fan art career took off with a table at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con where she had Doctor Mew buttons and posters.[15][16] Parks became famous due to Doctor Mew.[4][5][6][7][8][10][11][12] Later, Parks created other fan art pieces as The Catvengers.[1][14][17][12] Doctor Mew represents her most prominent work until Star Trek Cats in 2017.[15][10][16]

Content

In 2010, Parks depicted eleven of the Doctors as cats.[18] Most of the Doctors are domestic shorthairs.[2] The Eleventh Doctor is an Abyssinian cat.[9] In 2014, Parks included an update of Doctor Mew with John Hurt's War Doctor and Peter Capaldi's Doctor.[1][19] Parks commended her War Doctor illustration favourably with "I will say that I love how the John Hurt/War Cat Doctor came out, so I think he is one of my favorites right now."[1]

Merchandise

In 2013, Parks sold Doctor Mew pin-back buttons via Etsy for $1.[20]

Reception

Blastr staff selected Doctor Mew as their "Image of the Day."[21] In an overview of Phoenix Comicon 2016, Catster's Kate Benjamin commented "her collection of pop culture characters as cats never disappoints, especially the portraits of Doctor Mew."[22] Visual News's Jessica Czeck said Doctor Mew made Jenny Parks "internet famous."[6]

io9's Lauren Davis noted it was "bizarrely on-point."[23] Forbidden Planet's Joe Gordon called it "simply adorable."[24] Neatorama's Jill Harness opted they were "adorable."[20] Addressing Doctor Who fans, hauspanther staff declared "you’ll appreciate Jenny’s collection of “Doctor Mew” drawings."[25]

Catster's Phillip Mlyner described the title of the piece as "pun-tastic."[2] Neatorama's Zeon Santos reviewed it as "purrrfect."[26] In 2014, io9's Meredith Woerner called the updated version of Doctor Mew "It's glorious."[19]
