Star Trek Cats is a 2017 book by American comics artist, fan artist and scientific illustrator Jenny Parks. It depicts Star Trek episodes via cats.

Background[edit]

Development[edit]

"We actually didn't even know what we were going to do at first. We just knew it was going to be something with cats," Parks said. "We played around with doing a compilation of different things. Then, the problem is getting all the different licensers on board with each one. So, we decided to stick with something specific. Since [Chronicle] already has a relationship with CBS, we decided to go with 'Star Trek.'"

 —Jenny Parks[1][2][3]

Star Trek Cats represents Parks' most prominent work since the success of Doctor Mew, where she depicted various incarnations of Doctor Who's the Doctor as cats.[1] Parks has a degree and a graduate degree in scientific illustration at University of California, Santa Cruz.[1] Her fan art career took off with a table at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con where she had Doctor Mew buttons and posters.[1][3] Publisher Chronicle Books had a table a few spaces away.[1] Talks with Chronicle Books began in late 2015 and work in February 2016 to July 2016.[1]

Growing up, Parks was always a fan of cats as well as watching Star Trek: The Next Generation with her mother.[1][2] Her brother and mom would also attend Star Trek conventions in the 1990s.[2]

Content[edit]

Star Trek Cats features scenes from 17 different episodes.[4][1]

Sequel[edit]

In 2017, Parks confirmed a Star Trek: The Next Generation cat book in the works for publication in 2018.[25][14][1][26][2] The Nerdist's Eric Diaz speculated there might be books for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.[25]
