Domaine des Baumard

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Domaine des Baumard is a winery and vineyard located in Rochefort-sur-Loire, in the Maine-et-Loire department of the Loire Valley, France. One of the most historically significant estates in Anjou, it is particularly renowned for its wines from the Savennières and Quarts de Chaume appellations.[1][2]

History

The origins of the domaine date to 1634, when the maternal ancestors of Jean Baumard first acquired vineyard parcels in the area around Rochefort-sur-Loire — plots that remain at the heart of the estate today.[2][3] The family subsequently became vine nurserymen (pépiniéristes).

In 1955, Jean Baumard (1931–2023), a graduate of the universities of Dijon and Bordeaux, took over the estate at the age of 24. That same year he was appointed to a chair at the École Supérieure d'Agriculture et de Viticulture d'Angers.[1] Under his leadership the domaine expanded significantly: in 1957 he acquired over five hectares in the Quarts de Chaume appellation, and in 1968 he became the first winegrower from the south bank of the Loire to invest in Savennières, purchasing vines in the Clos du Papillon and Clos de Saint Yves from the Pirie family of Château de Varennes.[1][2] The Clos du Papillon takes its name from the shape of the vineyard parcels, which resemble two wings on either side of a path.[2] Jean Baumard was also the first to formally propose elevating Quarts de Chaume to grand cru status, as early as 1968, and was one of the founding producers of the Crémant de Loire appellation.[1][2] Beyond the domaine, he served as president of the Fédération Viticole de l'Anjou (1971–1976) and authored Un Grand Vin du Monde : Le Quarts de Chaume (2007).[1]

In 1987, his son Florent Baumard assumed management of the estate. He oversaw the construction of a new winery (chai), refined the wine range, introduced screwcap closures, and developed the domaine's presence on export markets, notably in the United States and the United Kingdom.[3]

Vineyards and wines

The domaine covers approximately 40 hectares spread across both banks of the Loire, managed using sustainable viticulture.[4][5] Chenin blanc is the dominant white grape variety; red wines are produced from Cabernet franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate produces wines across seven appellations:[4][6]

The Clos du Papillon and the Quarts de Chaume are widely regarded as the domaine's most iconic wines, and have helped bring wider international attention to both appellations.[1]
