Dominique M.J. Robinson (born March 1, 1982) is an American professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. A professional MMA competitor since 2005, Robinson has made a name for himself fighting all over the United States, mainly on the West coast. Robinson has competed for organizations such as Tachi Palace Fights and Palace Fighting Championship. He holds notable victories over UFC veterans John Gunderson and Dave Kaplan.

MMA career[edit]

Robinson started training MMA in 2003; teaching himself by watching instructional DVDs and watching fights.[1] Robinson began fighting professionally in smalls show in Tijuana, Mexico. With no trainers or managers, he fought in these smaller shows, "for fight experience".

He fought for the Gladiator Challenge promotion, where he fought at welterweight against a teammate of Charles Bennett, Jeff Ramputi. Robinson took the fight on two days notice and won the fight via unanimous decision. Robinson again fought in the welterweight division against the Brazilian Iure Silva Leal in an exhibition bout in which Iure weighed in at 193, losing via a controversial submission. Robinson fought in Mexico a few more times to gain more experience before calling it quits in Mexico, where he went 10-1 overall, as well as a draw to former Tachi Palace champ Isaac DeJesus in Stockton, California.

He then began getting antagonized over Myspace.com by a fellow Californian MMA fighter, Zack Yngojo. The two arranged to fight at a Cage Combat Fighting Championships event on October 6, 2007. Robinson dominated the bout, and won the fight after the cage side doctor was forced to put a halt to the bout. After the bout with Yngojo, Robinson fought John Reedy in Reedy's hometown of Visalia, California. During the bout Reedy landed several knees to Robinson while he was downed and was constantly using the cage to keep from being taken down. Despite the illegal tactics, Reedy was awarded the decision and Robinson lost his second fight in his career.

Palace Fighting Championships[edit]

In 2008 Robinson signed a deal with California based promotion, Palace Fighting Championship. His first fight with the promotion came at Palace Fighting Championships 9 against experienced veteran, Chuck Kim. Robinson defeated Kim via TKO in the second round. He then defeated former KOTC champ Takumi Nakayama via unanimous decision. On two weeks notice, Robinson was offered a lightweight title shot against Carlo Prater. Robinson had several broken ribs but accepted the bout anyway. He lost via unanimous decision.

Tachi Palace Fights[edit]

He made his Tachi Palace Fights debut against TUF and UFC veteran Gabe Ruediger. Ruediger submitted Robinson in the closing stages of second round via rear naked choke. In the match there was speculation that the timer cut out and the match should have gone to a third round.

In his second fight with the promotion Robinson faced another TUF and UFC veteran Dave Kaplan at TPF 5. Robinson won the fight via TKO after hitting Kaplan with a flying elbow strike and following up with several more elbows.

He then fought another former UFC fighter John Gunderson at Tachi Palace Fights 8: All or Nothing. Robinson was dominating the fight and in the third round he mounted Gunderson and finished him with ground and pound. The fight was supposed to determine the new number one contender for the lightweight title, but for unknown reasons, Robinson was never given his title shot.

Superior Cage Combat[edit]

Robinson made his Superior Cage Combat debut November 11, 2011 at Superior Cage Combat 3. Robinson fought UFC veteran, Steve Lopez, taking the fight on two days notice, cutting 25 lbs. After a back-and-forth affair, the fight went to a highly controversial majority draw. During the second round Robinson landed an illegal 12-6 elbow to the back of Lopez's head, causing the referee to deduct a point from Robinson, ultimately costing him the victory.[2]

In January 2012 it was announced that Robinson had signed with Canada's top MMA promotion Maximum Fighting Championship. His debut was announced for MFC 32 on January 27, 2012 against Mukai Maromo, filling in for the injured Adam Lynn.[3] However, for unknown reasons Robinson was pulled from the card and replaced by Dan Ring.

Robinson fought Paulo Goncalves Silva, a protégé of Anderson Silva, at Superior Cage Combat 4 on February 16, 2012, losing via decision. Robinson dominated the first two rounds and on several different occasions Robinson dropped Silva with strikes, leaving many in the audience puzzled by the judges decision. UFC president Dana White even acknowledged Robinson saying he believed he had won the fight.

On one week's notice, Robinson traveled to Russia to fight for Far Eastern Federation of Modern Pankration on April 28, 2012, against Alexey Polpudnikov[4] in an exhibition bout because his original opponent pulled out at the weigh in's. Despite controlling the fight throughout three rounds, Robinson lost via unanimous decision.
