Donald Marinelli (born June 9, 1953) is an American educator working in drama and computer science. He is notable for co-founding the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) with Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 1997. Marinelli subsequently expanded the ETC internationally to Australia and Japan; plus affiliate relationships with universities in Korea, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Marienelli established a dual-degree Master of Fine Arts program in acting with the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia.[1]

Marinelli's work in the esports industry led to the expansion of Inven Korea, a Korean esports media company, into North America as Inven Global.[2] After retiring from Carnegie Mellon, Marinelli became a Visiting Professor at Arizona State University's Arts, Media & Engineering program. He held adjunct teaching positions in technology management at Columbia University, Florida Southern College, and Northeastern University. Marinelli served as a consultant for Robert Morris University and Point Park University. Marinelli later worked with Văn Lang University in Vietnam on the development of its Center for Experiential Technologies.[3] In 2024, he helped launch the Center of Experiential Narrative Technology at Point Park University.[4]

Early life

Marinelli was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his Bachelor's degree in psychology and speech & drama from the University of Tampa in 1975, and his Master's in Clinical Psychology from Duquesne University in 1976. In 1984, he completed an associate's degree in Educational Administration from the Community College of the Air Force, and in 1987, he earned a PhD in Theatre History, Literature, and Criticism from the University of Pittsburgh. His doctoral dissertation focused on Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the founder of Italian Futurism.

Publications

Marinelli co-authored the book "The Comet and the Tornado," which was published in 2010. The memoir reflects on his partnership with Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the creation of the Entertainment Technology Center. The book includes an accompanying interactive DVD where users can ask "virtual Don" questions and hear his responses.[5] Marinelli gave the keynote address at the 2010 ACM SIGGRAPH conference.[6]
