Donald J. Sanborn (born February 19, 1950) is a Roman Catholic bishop, Rector of Most Holy Trinity Seminary[1] in Brooksville, Florida.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Donald Sanborn was born into a Roman Catholic family in New York. There he attended Catholic elementary school, and highschool.[2] He became interested in the Catholic priesthood and entered the seminary college in the Diocese of Brooklyn, which he attended until graduating in 1971. However in that very year he became unhappy with the modernist tendencies in that seminary.
SSPX[edit]
Becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the effects of the Second Vatican Council, he entered the SSPX seminary in Ecône, Switzerland. He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1975[3] and was appointed Rector of St. Joseph’s House of Studies in Armada, Michigan, in 1977. There he conducted an extensive research for a larger and newer to accommodate the ever growing amount of seminarians. Eventually, he acquired a former Jesuit retreat house, which later would come to be renamed as the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary. Later, he launched a fundraising program to expand the facility, in 1982.
The Nine[edit]
In 1983, he was among the nine American priests who opposed the liturgical changes that were imposed by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.[4]Hence, in 1983, he was expelled[5] from the SSPX, along with the other priests including Anthony Cekada and Daniel Dolan.[6]
Most Holy Trinity Seminary[edit]
Sanborn continued to function outside of the SSPX and founded Most Holy Trinity Seminary in 1995.[2] After being consecrated Bishop by Most. Rev. Robert McKenna in 2002, he continued to function as Rector of Most Holy Trinity Seminary, which in 2005 was relocated to Brooksville, Florida. He currently continues to train priests at Most Holy Trinity Seminary, which is now one of the largest sedevacantist seminaries in the world, and frequently travels to Europe and around the United States holding conferences promoting sedevacantism. On February 22, 2018, on the Feast of the See of St. Peter at Antioch, Bishop Sanborn consecrated Fr. Joseph Selway to the Episcopacy. During the ceremony of Episcopal Consecration, Bp. Geert Stuyver from the Mater Boni Consilii Institute and Bp. Daniel Dolan assisted as Co-Consecrators.
