Donavan Mutin (Pronounced mutan; born September 22, 2000) is an American professional football inside linebacker for the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League (UFL). He played college football for the University of Houston. His professional career began as a member of the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
Early life
Mutin was born in Spring, Texas and attended Klein Collins High School where he played linebacker for the Tigers football team. During his senior year, Mutin earned Academic All-State and Academic All-District and District 15-6A MVP honors. He was ranked No. 41 inside linebacker by 247Sports.[1] Rated a three-star recruiting prospect, Mutin received no less than three scholarship offers leading towards graduation in 2017.[2]
College career
Committing to the University of Houston, Mutin began as a true freshman in 2018. As a linebacker, Mutin played in 10 games and totalled six tackles during his first season with the Houston Cougars. During his sophomore season in 2019 Mutin turned out an impressive performance totalling 61 tackles including 35 solos across all 12 games in which he was part of the starting lineup. The following year in 2020, Mutin started the first three games of his junior season before missing the final five games due to sustaining a concussion.[3] He finished his season with 22 tackles and served as team captain. In his senior season in 2021, Mutin played as starting linebacker in 13 games. He served as team captain once more and led team in 77 total tackles. In 2022, Mutin served as team captain for a third time, starting 12 of 13 games. He raised the bar in tackles at 85 total tackles. Mutin earned All-State AFCA Good Works Team honors. While at Houston, Mutin earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion.[1] He entered the NFL draft in 2023.[4]
Professional career
Indianapolis Colts
On May 5, 2023, Donavan Mutin signed a three-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He remained on the team's offseason roster and practice squad until his release on August 31, 2023.[5][6]
Atlanta Falcons
Mutin signed a 1-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024.[6]
Michigan Panthers
On December 23, 2024, Mutin signed with the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League.[7][8]
