Donghua Liu is a New Zealand businessman and expatriate of China.[1]
Liu became a New Zealand resident in 2005, three years after he first applied for residency.[1] Then, in 2010, Liu was granted New Zealand citizenship by Nathan Guy, the Minister of Internal Affairs, after Guy was lobbied by Maurice Williamson and John Banks.[2]
Liu became publicly known in New Zealand when it emerged that then Minister of Immigration Maurice Williamson had phoned up the police to enquire about a domestic violence case which Liu was involved with. The call by Williamson was labelled political interference by the opposition in Parliament, and led to Williamson's resignation as a minister.[2]
Liu has been active in donating to both the major New Zealand political parties, with a $15,000 donation to the Labour Party and a $22,000 donation to the National Party.[1]
