Donna Bahorich is the Chairwoman of the State Board of Education in Houston, Texas.[1][2] She was appointed in 2015 by Governor Greg Abbott.

Early life and education

Bahorich was born in Ronceverte, West Virginia on 14 September 1955.[3] She received her Master of Arts degree in 1990 from Liberty University and her Bachelor of Science degree in 1978 from Virginia Tech University.[3]

Career

In 2004, Bahorich was a volunteer director for the Harris County Republican Party, and in 2005, she campaigned for then-state Senator Dan Patrick.[1] She ran for the State Board of Education and was elected as the District 6 representative in 2013 and 2017.[3][4] She was appointed by the governor as Chair in June 2015[5][6][7] She is a member of the board's Committee on School Finance.[3]

Bahorich was a member of the pastor's council at Houston Vineyard Church, the West Houston P-16 Council, while also serving as president of the Daughters of Liberty Republican Women. She participates in the American Leadership Forum-Houston, Education Class 43 and Conservative Leaders for Education.[3]

In September 2018, Greg Abbott had directed Bahorich and the SBOE to correct the history stated in the curriculum of the state's seventh-grade.[8] In an attempt to reduce the large number of historical figures required to be taught, a committee suggested changes including trimming the large number of historic figures in the curriculum of Texas schools.[9][5][10][11]

Recognition

Bahorich was recognized by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) for the 2017 State Director's Leadership Medal, 2018 Leadership Award, and 2019 Consensus Builder Award.[3]
