Donnie Hogan, advocate for the legalization of marijuana and the disease ankylosing spondylitis

Donald Ray Hogan or Donnie Hogan (born July 5, 1973) is an advocate for both the autoimmune disease ankylosing spondylitis and the legalization of marijuana. He is the half-brother of Anna Nicole Smith (they have the same father, Donald Eugene Hogan[1]) and made several media appearances after her death due to an overdose.[citation needed]

Personal life[edit]

In 2007, Hogan claimed his sister Donna Hogan's book Train Wreck: The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith contained "false... offensive... defamatory statements".[2]

In 2008, Hogan was diagnosed with the disease ankylosing spondylitis,[3] a chronic autoimmune disease. The diagnosis also found that it was systemic meaning that it affects the whole body including the liver, heart, and brain. Hogan revealed in his book Living in the Shadows that he now takes methadone. He also uses medical marijuana to help control his chronic pain and treat other side effects of the disease like seizures from low potassium. He switched to marijuana from hydrocodone when he feared overdosing.[3]

Hogan and his wife are owners of Mid-Michigan Care Givers Club.[4]

In 2012, Hogan and his wife were charged with the illegal sale of marijuana.[3] The arrest was part of a series of raids on medical marijuana dispensaries.[5] Hogan claimed the arrest was unjust.[6] Charges against Hogan were later dropped and those against his wife reduced to possession after a plea bargain because she was a licensed caregiver with patients who use medical marijuana.[7] Conviction of a felony would mean she would longer be eligible to be a caregiver.[8] The Hogan's decided to stop a rally they had organised in favour of medical marijuana after they received a cease and desist letter from Hayes Township due to the arrest.[9]

Living in the Shadows[edit]

His recent book Living in the Shadows details his life as a patient enduring life with ankylosing spondylitis. It details his battle for the right to help others use medical marijuana as a chronic pain alternative. It also shares his private thoughts about his sister's death and gives a first-hand account of what it is like to live with the chronic autoimmune disease.[citation needed]

Hogan has made television appearances on Montel Williams, Inside Edition, MSNBC Live, Channel 1 news (German television), Mid-Michigan Live, and Digital Journal.[clarification needed]

Advocate[edit]

Ankylosing spondylitis[edit]

Hogan has been a strong advocate for the disease ankylosing spondylitis and medical marijuana since 2008. He is an advocate for the Spondylitis Association of America, and began supporting "The Chalk Where You Walk" Ankylosing Spondylitis Awareness Project in 2013 and is currently filming the Disabled in America documentary project highlighting the discrimination of disabled American citizens.[citation needed]

Legalization of marijuana[edit]

Hogan became a voice and advocate for the legalization of marijuana. He became a caregiver for other patients with ankylosing spondylitis in Michigan.[citation needed] He is the owner of the Mid-Michigan Compassion Center,[10] which provides caregivers a safe place to meet patients.
