Doomspire Brickbattle is a 4-team massively multiplayer online game developed by Temple of Brickbattle on Roblox.[2] The 2007 original game (now extinct), created by player Shedletsky,[1] is commonly referred to as the oldest combat game on the platform.[3]
It is rated ages 9+ for violence and has received over 858.8 million visits and 2.7 million favorites as of November 2023.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
Each server's size is limited to a maximum of 12 players, which are then divided evenly across 4 teams: red, blue, green, and yellow.[2] Each team has a tower (spire) which is floating in space. The objective of the game is to eliminate the other 3 teams' towers and their spawns in order to remain the last team standing.[4] Once all of a team's spawns are thrown off the map, its player will no longer spawn and will instead appear at an obby area until the round is over.
All players have seven tools: a sword, rocket launcher, bomb, superball, slingshot, wall trowell, and paintball gun. All weapons, except the wall, can be used to injure other players, but only the rocket and bomb will destroy the spires' blocks.[2]
History[edit]
On May 1, 2006, John Shedletsky (user Shedletsky)[5] launched the game Crossroads, now-named Classic: Crossroads and owned by Roblox.[6] The game gave rise to a game genre known as "brickbattling,"[7] in which players combat one another and tear apart structures.[8][9] It got temporarily taken down in 2017, but returned and became the only "classic" Roblox game that survived the 2017 shutdown of Roblox’s oldest games and remains recently updated.[5]
On March 23, 2008, user Superbloxman52 launched Classic Brickbattle-Doomspire, based off the brickbattling concept and featuring the 4-spire layout still present today.[10] The game became unfunctional in 2014 and remains inactive.
Then, on November 11, 2017, Temple of Brickbattle released Doomspire Brickbattle, a very similar version of the game, reviving the brickbattle genre.[2] With the 2008 game gone, this version became the most popular version of the genre, particularly during the
The developers currently have a Roblox group[1] as well as a Discord server for active member discussion.[11] It also has a semi-active Reddit community created in 2019 with 60+ members.[12]
The game has also inspired fanart[13][14] and been the subject of several video tutorials.[15]
Clones[edit]
The popularity of the game has inspired the creation of several clones on Roblox.[16] It also has a Fortnite clone[17] and has been suggested as a Lego game.[3]
Super Doomspire[edit]
Created by Doomsquires (players Polyhex & Blutreefrog) on August 24, 2019, this doomspire game has 203+ million visits and 950,000+ favorites.[18]
Servers are capped at 16 players, rather than 12. This version involves 5 weapon slots–rocket launcher, sword, bomb, ball, and trowell. Players can purchase variants of these 5 weapons as well as over different 300 stickers (emoticons) with the in-game currency, "crowns."[19]
Other popular clones[edit]
Other popular Doomspire Brickbattle clones on Roblox include 12 Team Doomspire (by E_lps),[20] DoomSpire Rocket Battles (by The BitSquid Fan Club),[21] DoomSpire Modded (by SL Studios),[22] Anti-Gravity DoomSpire (by Oddly Addicting Games),[23]and Turbo Doomspire BrickBattle.[16] Each of these have varying graphics and gameplay, but have all been visited at least 2 million times.
