Dorjee K Thongun (1 March 1962) is an Indian film director, film producer, screenwriter and documentary filmmaker from Arunachal Pradesh, a state in Northeast India. He is the second filmmaker from Arunachal Pradesh.[1]
Early life[edit]
Thongun was born in Rupa, a small village in Arunachal Pradesh.[2] He is one of the two sons of Tsering Thongun and Rinchin Dema Khrimey. Thongun did his schooling in Rupa and later completed his graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru College at Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh. After completion of his studies, he started his career in filmmaking with the first film director of Arunachal Pradesh, Taro Chatung. He married Dorjee Pema Thongdok, an elected ASM (Anchal Samiti Member) and at present he is residing at Doimara, a village founded by his father in 1977, in Khellong Forest Division of Arunachal Pradesh.
Film career[edit]
He assisted Taro Chatung for two Hindi movies namely Meri Zindagi and Frontier Students. He directed his first feature film in 2002, Mein Indian Hum Indian, which was one of the earliest movies from Arunachal Pradesh in Hindi language. He directed and produced six featured length movies till 2018.
He is also known for his documentaries which he made on various subjects including Dalai Lama, handicrafts and tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. He made few documentaries for Doordarshan, an autonomous public service broadcaster founded by the Government of India and is owned by the Broadcasting Ministry of India.
Awards[edit]
In 2014 he received the North-East Best Director Award by Prag Cine Awards. In 2017, he received the Gold Award from the Arunachal Pradesh government for his contribution to the regional film industry.
