Dr. Alexander Kern

Dr. Alexander Kern is a German Venture Capital fund manager, public speaker, author and university professor, whose work focuses on fostering innovation and sustainability. Currently, he is the Managing Partner at AKX Capital[1] and the Euro-Institute, advisory firms setting up international Venture Capital and Private Equity funds. Further, he is a Professor for Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital at EDHEC[2] (France) and the International University of Monaco [3](Principality of Monaco). He is also an author of different academic articles and books in the space of finance and venture capital.

Education[edit]

His interdisciplinary background is grounded in a wide range of academic studies. He holds an undergrad in Business Administration (International University of Monaco, Principality of Monaco), a Master of Science in Business Administration (University Sophia Antipolis, Nice), and a PhD in Corporate Finance & Innovation Management Science (Aix-Marseille University, Marseille).

In his PhD thesis, he explored the outcome of ‘shared capitalism’ – employee stock ownership – on the weighted average cost of capital at listed firms such as Silicon Valley IT-companies. The research hypothesis is that shared capitalism increases productivity at firms while decreasing their cost of capital. The results of his research were presented, for example, at international conferences, at the European Commission, and to the German Finance Ministry.

Alexander Kern also served as research assistant professor to the renowned economist Richard B. Freeman at Harvard University.

Career[edit]

After spending a year at Harvard University, and the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States where he worked as a Research Assistant of Professor Dr. Richard Freeman, he successfully moved to the corporate side.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in different businesses in high-performance environments such as consulting, finance, international politics, and digital start-ups. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Sparkasse a German Bank and ran for state parliament in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. He also worked for Modex, a leading Blockchain Database provider.

In 2016, he eventually joined as Managing Partner the Deutsches Euro Institut, a consulting firm with expertise in M&A, VC/PE, Corporate Restructuring, and Corporate Development. In 2019, he co-founded and invested in Konkretly a Data Technology Real Estate startup, which it has been officially launched in 2021 in the German market. And in 2020, he launched AKX Capital, a company that operates mostly in the Venture Capital sector with also a particular focus on his personal branding.

Further, he is a professor of Venture Capital at EDHEC (France) and Sustainable Development and Innovation Management at the International university of Monaco (Monaco)

Activism[edit]

Beyond his professional work, Dr. Kern has engaged in several activist and practitioner activities promoting innovation, sustainability and venture capital. He has been invited as a guest speaker to different international events, such as the CC Forum - Investment in Sustainable Development and the Ritossa Summits - Global Family Office Investment Summit.

He is actively involved with Accelerators and Incubators Hubs (e.g. UnternehmerTUM[4]) and University Societies (e.g. King's Business Society[5]) where he holds guest-lectures. He has also been featured in magazines[6][7], served as a jury member in European Startup competitions[8] and interviewed[9] for different digital platforms.

Besides his academic workflow[10], Dr. Kern is the author of two books about venture capital:

  1. "The Unicorn Ring" a kids book that combines his two biggest passions: family and innovation.
  2. "Kinetic Innovation - How to manage your Venture Capital Fund". This book describes the Venture Capital landscape with a particular focus on Europe and gives readers a hands-on guide on how to develop a fund from A to Z
