Dr. Emily Splichal is a functional podiatrist and human movement specialist specializing in integrated foot health and barefoot science.[1]. She is most known for her business ventures, public speaking, and media appearances.
Early Life & Education
Splichal was born on July 7th, 1980. [2] After graduating high school, Splichal went to Hamline University in St Paul, Minnesota to study forensic science [3]. After graduating, she did a forensic chemistry internship at Walter Reed Medical Center and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology where she published her first research study “ANALYSIS OF FLUORIDE IN POST-MORTEM TISSUES USING AN ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODE”.[4]
Shortly after entering the fitness industry, Splichal decided to pursue a medical degree and enrolled in New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City. [5] In June 2009 she enrolled in a master’s program at A.T. Still University where she focused on human movement. After receiving her M.S. in Human Movement, Splichal returned to her podiatric training and completed her surgical residency at Mt Vernon Hospital in Mt Vernon, New York [6].
Medical Career
After graduating residency, Splichal joined Gramercy Park Podiatry in New York City [7] In 2017, Splichal left traditional podiatry and insurances to start her own direct-care practice, The Center for Functional & Regenerative Podiatry [8]. It is here that she has further expanded functional podiatry and her integrated approach to foot health and movement disorders. [9]
Media Career
Splichal’s media career started in 2009 after launching her Catwalk Confidence program. Catwalk Confidence was a barefoot workout to build posture and balance for women who wear high heels. [10]. This program was picked up by large fitness chains [11] Shortly after the launch of Catwalk Confidence, Splichal garnered extensive media attention as the podiatrist who endorsed high heels. She appeared on many TV media outlets to speak about walking in high heels and her Catwalk Confidence program. Such appearances included Oprah Winfrey Show[12] and the Rachael Ray Show [13].
Splichal’s media profile includes featured articles in publications [14] such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Medical Daily, Bustle, Footwear News, The Inquirer, WELL + GOOD, and more [15] [16]
Entrepreneurial Career
In 2012, Splichal founded EFBA Global, an education company for health and wellness professionals to learn about barefoot science [17]. Courses have been translated into fourteen languages and include instruction on the influences of movement and have been taught to over 25,000 professionals in 35 countries [18].
Splichal self-published her book Barefoot Strong in 2017 which explores the science behind barefoot stimulation. The book includes barefoot activation exercises, vitamin supplements to protect your peripheral nerves, and more. [19]
In 2017 Splichal founded Naboso which is a sensory technology company which develops and sells textured products designed to stimulate the nerves in the bottom of the feet. [20] Products include sensory-based insoles, socks, mats and accessories all of which use a patented two-point discrimination texture that claims to stimulate the nervous system and enhance movement. Splichal has a utility patent for her two-point discrimination pattern used in Naboso (A63B21/4037) [21].
