Naboso, officially Naboso Technology Inc, is a fitness and wellness company founded by functional podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal [2]. Naboso sells textured insoles, socks, mats, and accessories [3] that use a patented two-point discrimination texture that claims to stimulate the mechanoreceptors in the bottom of the foot and increase movement. [4] The Naboso product line uses research [5] to demonstrate the benefits of foot awareness, balance and posture, particularly for audiences with chronic neurological conditions. [6]
History
Naboso was founded in January 2017 by functional podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal after she spent several years traveling the world teaching about barefoot science and barefoot running[7]. Splichal started her career in 2008 at the peak of the barefoot running trend near the launch of the book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. During her career travels, Splichal was looking for a way to better activate the feet when athletes took off their shoes to train. Splichal concluded that the surfaces we stand and train on are just as important as the shoes we decide to wear. [8]
This led to the launch of the first Naboso products. Shortly after launch, Naboso developed its patented textured insoles. [9] Splichal designed the Naboso texture to target the proprioceptors of the feet and to try to improve various aspects of patients’ and professionals’ lives.[10] Initially based out of New York City, the company moved its headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona in July 2020 [11]. It is here that they oversee all their US-based fulfillments.
In 2021, Naboso launched its first crowd equity raise through StartEngine to fund its growth and new product development.[12] Naboso raised over $560k through this platform. [13] In November 2021, Naboso launched its textured socks, meant to support foot recovery while improving nerve stimulation and circulation [14].
In May 2023, Naboso was awarded a utility patent for their textural pattern and manufacturing process (A63B21/4037). [15]
License Agreements
Naboso has partnered with multiple companies to integrate their patented material into other products. One of the most notable license agreements is a Naboso Trail Sandal with Xero Shoes.[16] Other license agreements include those with TrueForm Running[17], Boditrak [18] and PowerPlate. [19]
Research
Naboso believes in funding research to further the study of sensory science and proprioception, and how it can benefit those with chronic neurological conditions [20]. Naboso products are currently being studied through various IRB approved research studies at Sloan Kettering [21] in New York City, the MS Mandell Center [22] in Connecticut, and Monash University. [23]
