Dr. Hafizuddin S. Shaikh (16 January 1930 - 1996) was a Professor of Orthodontics and founder member of Indian Orthodontic Society. He was born in Nashik and raised in (unknown). Both his parents were doctor and originated from Karwar in coastal Karnataka. He completed his M.D.S. (Master of Dental Surgery) in 1961. He spent the next four decades as a Clinician, Academician and Professor of Orthodontics teaching in India, Libya and Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Shaikh was one of the first orthodontists trained in India but his dedication towards the profession made sure that he was not the last. He taught orthodontics for around 17 years with University of Bombay and trained over 60 post graduate students in the field of orthodontics. His clinical experience spanning 40 years as an orthodontist he taught and practiced a) Standard Edgewise and Tweed Edgewise technic, Straight Wire technique b) Begg and Tip Edge technique c) Labio-Lingual technique d) Removable Appliances e) Functional Appliances f) Orthopedic and Orthodontic Management of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate cases g) Orthognathic Surgery
He published over 80 scientific papers in National and International Journal and was awarded ‘Best Paper Published’ multiple times.
During his tenure with University of Bombay, he held multiple positions like

3. Indian Orthodontic Society
The Early Years:
The Indian Orthodontic Society was the first Speciality Society of Dentistry in India. The IOS started as a Study Group in Mumbai, in 1963 and was formally established as the Indian Orthodontic Society on Friday the 5th October 1965.
The late Dr. H. D. Merchant (Father of Orthodontics in India) was the founder President and Dr. Naishadh Parikh the founder Secretary and Treasurer. The other founder members were Late Dr. A.B.Modi, Dr. Keki Mistry, Dr.Mohandas Bhat, Dr. Prem Prakash and Late Dr. Hafizuddin S.Shaikh.
IOS Objectives
Among other objectives the efforts of the IOS were directed.
1. To Popularise And Promote The Study Of Orthodontics In India.
2. To Popularise And Spread The Practice Of Orthodontics In India.
3. To Educate The Indian Public In The Importance Of Orthodontics.
The Indian Orthodontic Society held its first Conference in the year 1967 at New Delhi with a scientific session. This was followed regularly by annual conferences every year, which are attended by a large number of Orthodontists from within the country and abroad.
The JOURNAL OF THE INDIAN ORTHODONTIC SOCIETY was started by Dr. H.D. Merchant as the first Editor. Today it is one of the finest journals in India and shares an equal platform with Journals from abroad.
The Later Years
The IOS holds PG Student Convention every year, since the year 1996, for the benefit of the Student members of the IOS.
With the signing of the charter of the World Federation of Orthodontics at San Francisco USA in 1995, the Indian Orthodontic Society became a part of the World Federation of Orthodontics.
In the year 1999, the Indian Orthodontic Society achieved another first by establishing the Indian Board of Orthodontics, the first such Board in the field of Dentistry in India and the third in the world. The Board was established to examine the members of the IOS with five years of experience after MDS in Clinical excellence in the practice of Orthodontics.
