Dr. Rajesh Kumar (1 January 1947 – 21 January 2005) was an Indian politician from Bihar who served as a Member of Parliament in the 10th Lok Sabha[2], representing the Gaya (Scheduled Caste) constituency. He was also a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and held various political and organizational positions in the state.

Early life and education

Dr. Rajesh Kumar[3] was born on 1 January 1947 in Chahal Mudera village in Atri, Gaya district, Bihar, India. He was the son of Raghubir Ram. He completed his education in Bodh Gaya and obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and a Ph.D. in Hindi from Magadh University, Bodh Gaya.

Political career

Rajesh Kumar was actively involved in state and national politics over several decades.

He was elected as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Bodh Gaya constituency in 1977 and again in 1985. During his tenure in the Bihar government, he served as Parliamentary Secretary from 1977 to 1979 under Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur.

He was associated with multiple political parties during his career, including the Janata Party, Lok Dal, and later the Janata Dal. He also served as General Secretary of Lok Dal in Bihar from 1980 to 1988.

Between 1989 and March 1990, he served as Deputy Leader of the Janata Dal Legislature Party in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

In 1991, Rajesh Kumar was elected to the 10th Lok Sabha from the Gaya (SC) constituency. During his parliamentary tenure (1991–1996), he served under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao as opposition of the Congress-led central government.

He was also a member of legislative committees, including the Welfare Committee and the Nivedan Samiti of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

In his later political career, he became associated with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and was considered among its early members in Bihar. At the time of his death, he was reported to be a senior leader and office-bearer of the party.

Death

Rajesh Kumar was killed on 24 January 2005[4] during the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. At the time, he was contesting as a candidate of the Lok Janshakti Party from the Imamganj constituency in Gaya district.

According to reports[5], he was attacked by Maoist (Naxalite) militants near Madar village while campaigning. His vehicle was intercepted and he was shot dead along with several others, including his aide and security personnel. The attackers subsequently set the vehicle on fire.[6]

The killing occurred amid a broader pattern of election-related violence in Bihar. Contemporary reports, including coverage by BBC Hindi, highlighted the role of political rivalry and insurgent activity in disrupting the electoral process during that period.[7]

Personal life

Rajesh Kumar was married to Chandra Mani Devi. The couple had one son and one daughters. His son, Kumar Sarvjeet, is also a politician.

He was known for his involvement in social and political activities in Bihar.
