Draft Zero: a screenwriting podcast is a podcast that began airing on March 1, 2014. It is billed as a show that "where two filmmakers try to work out what makes great screenplays work". They release around 10 episodes a year. The podcast is hosted by filmmakers Stuart Willis and Chas Fisher.

The show is known for its in-depth analytical approach to screenwriting, with episodes running on average 2 hours each with multiple chapter breaks. Topics have included midpoints, status transactions, the forces of antagonism, sequence structure.[1], tactics, character motivations and the use of "unfilmables".

While guests are rare on the show, notable appearances include actress Sarah Snook on Episode 14[2], Australian showrunner Blake Ayshford on Episode 27, and producer/developer Stephen Cleary as a regular guest.

All episodes are available for free and computer-generated transcripts are available from Episode 49 onwards and are hosted on GitHub.

Format[edit]

The general format of the show is to propose a hypothesis about screenwriting, deep dive into a number of scripts to explore the hypothesis, and then bring it back to what the hosts (and listeners) can use to improve their own writing[3].

Early episodes (1-18) had "follow-up" to listener questions and general discussion at the beginning of the episodes. From episode 19 onwards, this discussion was moved to the end of episodes, after the end credits, and labelled "backmatter". There are also stand-alone episodes that break the general format, focusing on broader questions of craft and career, that are prefixed as "backmatter" episodes. These are released annually.

Reception[edit]

Draft Zero has received positive reviews. As of November 22, 2019, it has an average rating of 4.8/5 on podbay.fm[4]. It is ranked #5 in Feedspot's list of screenwriting podcasts[5] and #3 in Player.FM's list of top screenwriting podcasts[6].

Script Reader Pro calls it one of the "best screenwriting podcasts available if you’re looking for specific discussions on the craft."[7] While Non-Profit Colleges Online recommends the podcast to English and Creative Writing students[8].

Quentin Tarantino discussed the episode analysing his work (Episode 13) on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast[9]
