Tours 2018 →

DreamHack Masters Marseille 2018 was a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament held in Marseille, France from April 18-22, 2018. The tournament was organized by DreamHack, and was their first Counter-Strike tournament of 2018. The event featured 12 invited teams, in addition to four qualifying teams, competing for a total prize pool of US$250,000.[4]

Danish team Astralis cruised to victory in the tournament, losing only one map in the entire event and dominating the Ukrainian Natus Vincere in the final 16-4, 16-11.[5] Despite this performance, Natus Vincere player Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev received the MVP award for his outstanding individual performance during the tournament.[3]

The tournament was also a part of the Intel Grand Slam, a cash prize sponsored by Intel that will award US$1,000,000 to any team that wins four of the last ten events organized by ESL or DreamHack.[6] By winning the tournament, Astralis won their first victory in the Intel Grand Slam, giving them 9 tournaments to win 3 more events.

Background[edit]

The tournament was the first tournament for several new rosters; North American team Team Liquid had replaced Lucas "steel" Lopes with Epitacio "TACO" de Melo shortly before the tournament began after the latter was dropped from the Brazilian SK Gaming.[7] To replace TACO, SK signed Cloud9's Jake "Stewie2K" Yip.[8] This was their first event with Stewie2k on LAN. Cloud9, to fill in the gap left by Stewie2k's departure, signed Pujan "FNS" Mehta.[9] The new Team EnVyUs lineup, created in February when Alexandre "xms" Forté and Christophe "SIXER" Xia were benched to make room for Fabien "kioShiMa" Fiey and Ali "hAdji" Haïnouss, were also looking to make a splash at their debut.[10][11] FaZe Clan were forced to play without Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer, who had to take an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons. Swedish player Richard "Xizt" Landström was signed to play as a long-term substitute in his stead.[12]

Format[edit]

The tournament began with a group stage, with four groups of four teams each. Each groups would be played in a double-elimination format, with only the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. The opening matches and elimination match in each group were played as a best-of-one, and the winners' matches and decider matches were played as a best-of-three.

The playoffs were played in a single-elimination, best-of-three format.

Regional Qualifiers[edit]

Three regional qualifiers were held: One in Europe, one in North America, and one in Asia. All qualifiers were played online and featured 8 teams in a single-elimination, best-of-three bracket. Europe received two qualifying spots, while North America and Asia each received one.
