Dream SMP
The Dream SMP is a Minecraft private survival multiplayer (SMP) roleplay server created and hosted by Minecraft YouTuber Dream in May 2020.[1][2][3] The server is played by numerous fellow Minecraft YouTubers such as Wilbur Soot, TommyInnit and others who roleplay as fictionalized versions of themselves within a loose overarching plot.
Plot and events[edit]
The overarching plot of the Dream SMP is loosely scripted, and consists of multiple significant events such as wars, festivals, and rebellions. The interactions and some of the circumstances are improvised.[2][4] Cecilia D'Anastasio, writing in Wired, described the Dream SMP as a form of live theatre and as a "Macchiavellian political drama".[2]
The Disc Saga[edit]
Since Dream was busy with Minecraft Manhunts and speedrunning, he had not had time to experience the new updates and snapshots which Minecraft was offering. So, on April 24, 2020, he started the Dream SMP with GeorgeNotFound.[5] Soon after the founding of the SMP, its first members were added, with included, Sapnap, ItsAlyssa, and awesamdude. With these 5, they founded the community house, nether portal, and the courtyard as some of their projects. And before long, 2 more members were added, with included Ponk and BadBayHalo. Ponk afterwards started building the first lemon tree, and started to trap people's houses. Because of this, his lemon tree was burnt down in rage by GeorgeNotFound. Then, TommyInnit was added to the server. TommyInnit was known to start drama, and that was exactly what he did. Within 20 minutes of him joining the server, he was put in the courtyard due to him killing GeorgeNotFound repeatedly and looting chests. But, he escaped resulting in a banishment, but still that did not solve any prin a soblems. That resulted in a ban. But, Tommy was later added back again. A few days later, the first war began. It all started when Tommy decided to build his house on a cliffside directly next to Ponk's lemon tree. But, they almost immeadiately began fighting over land. Ponk killed Tommy, and trapped his house. Following this, Sapnap was enraged and burned down Ponk's lemon tree. Then, Ponk teamed up with ItsAlyssa to burn down Sapnap's house. They had crossed the line. Sapnap teamed up with TommyInnit to kill Ponk and ItsAlyssa, but in the middle of their fight, Dream logged on. Dream decided to stop the fighting but soon realized he was very undergeared, and within seconds, was killed. Then, Dream decided to take Tommy's most prized possessions. His disks. Given Sapnap and Tommy were allies, Sapnap agreed to steal the disks back. And before long, he found one. He then hid it in his mine. But, he knew Dream would stop at nothing to find the disk. Then, Tommy and Sapnap recruited Tubbo. They planned to ambush Dream and take Dream down with axes. And they actually did it. Tubbo managed to kill Dream and gave Tommy the disks. Tommy hid the discs in a site off-camera. Afterwards, 3 new members were added. Punz, ItsFundy, and Purpled were added too. This led to development in the server. Then a day after the battle, Dream said he got the discs. Tommy tried bargaining but that idea was shut down. But Tubbo said that he had a valuable netherite chestplate, and Dream said if he didn't give it to him in 20 minutes, he would burn the discs. Tommy wuld portal-trap Dream, but that didn't work. Then, Dream began playing the discs in the sky. This sparked the Build Battle. Tubbo built up to the disc platform and took one disc. He ran off but was killed and took the disc again. They built up higher and higher. But then, Dream was distracted by Tubbo and Tommy took it. But Dream took it again. Then, Tommy and Tubbo took the trade. But then, the came up another plan. Tubbo took the discs and Tommy kept his chestplate. But, the discs were fakes. So they came up with another plan. Tommy believed that the discs were hidden in Dream's secret base. They used an exploit to see through the ground and look for it, and within minutes they found it. But, the discs were not there. Then they took the trade, and this time there was no scam. The discs were real. Then, Tommy came up with a plan to hide the discs. It was using a ender chest. But then, Dream attacked upon hearing their plans. Then they came up with a plan. Tubbo would distract Dream while Tommy got obsidian from the community nether portal. The plan worked. They made an ender chest and locked away the discs forever.[6]

Streamed on Twitch, the Dream SMP has attracted a large viewership, notably Thomas "TommyInnit" Simons, who became the fastest-growing account on the streaming platform with an average viewer count of over 300,000.[7] The Verge has described it as a "worldwide phenomenon", with SMP fans writing fan fiction, creating fan art and composing fan songs. The popularity of Heat Waves, an SMP-related fan fiction series hosted on Archive of Our Own helped Heat Waves, the song by Glass Animals, to reach the 2020 Hottest 100 tracks in Australia.[8][9]
