Dubblestandart is a dub band from Vienna.

History

Dubblestandart is a dub reggae band from Vienna, Austria who came to internationally success through their collaboration with Lee Scratch Perry, Ariup from the Slits & film director David Lynch on their critically acclaimed studio album Return From Planet Dub in 2009 as well as through many live appearances as a backing band and on their own, performing shows in Europe, Canada, Russia, India, Switzerland a.o.

Dubblestandart was founded by the original members Paul Zasky, Robbie Ost, Johnny Heilig and Operator Marek in 1987. Today's setup consists of 2 of the original members, Robbie Ost (Dub Mix, studio production) and Paul Zasky (who is also the bandleader), as well as Ali Tersch, who plays drums since 1993 (he worked also as a drummer for internationally known singer, producer Supermax) and Herbert Pirker (since 2001) on guitar, who is also the guitar player for House of Riddim, a well known backing band for reggae artists touring in Europe.

Dubblestandart is known for energetic, often improvisational live sets, which they call Hi-Energy Dub or 21st Century Dub. Since the mid-1990s they have played many concerts in Europe, Canada, Russia and India. They have released sixteen studio albums, a series of 12inches and Maxi CD recordings, as well as various remixes for Waldeck, Supermax, MC Dehli Sultanate, The Bant Singh Project, Elodie Ozanne and others. Their most successful album to date is Return From Planet Dub, which was released in 2009 and produced at GoEast Studios Vienna with Lee Scratch Perry and Ari Up.

Dubblestandart was discovered in 1992 by music journalist Walter Gröbchen and later signed to Gig Records, when they won the DJ competition of the only independent music covering radio show in Austria at that time Die Musicbox [de]. Die Musikbox was a show of the mainstream radio station Ö3. The album Egalica, released 1994 was released on the label GiG Records, which was owned by Markus Spiegel [de], who signed Falco for his first recordings. Gig Records was an important label for many artists of the Austropop & New Wave scene of the early 1980's. The songs "Brand New Toy" & "Dubblestandart Sound Is In The Air" of the Egalica album, reached Nr 4 & Nr 7 at the Ö3 Austrian Top 40 Charts of 1994 and 1995.The excursion into pop music lasted only a short time and Dubblestandart soon returned to their original style, Dub.In 1996 they were signed by Christoph Moser to the upcoming label Hoanzl [de], a well known progressive Austrian record, distribution and publishing company, known for their distinctive blend of independent artists(Music, Film).

Dubblestandart has worked with a number of internationally known singers, musicians and producers from the Reggae & Dub scene, who have either remixed original Dubblestandart material or where backed at live shows by them. Together with Lee Scratch Perry and Ari Up they gave a concert at New York cities Central Park in 2009 and with Lee Perry and Adrian Sherwood at the Geometry Of Now Festival 2017 in Moscow, Russia. Dubblestandart first worked with Lee Scratch Perry already in 1992 for a couple of live shows in Europe. Dubblestandart toured twice through Canada, 2006 and 2008 performing at several festivals, including the Vancouver Folk Festival, The Vancouver Island Music Festival, The Calgary Folk Festival, The Victory Folk Festival, The Hill Side Festival and others.2013 they performed in Goa, India at the Live At The Console festival with MC Dehli Sultanate & Begum X, who are the lead singers of The Ska Vengers.

In 2009 Paul Zasky met John Emch from Subatomic Sound System in New York and forwarded him several original sound recordings from Dubblestandart's, Return From Planet Dub album, which resulted in several releases of Subatomic Sound System, featuring the vocal samples of Lee Perry, Ariup from the Slits and David Lynch. This launched the career of the, by then relatively unknown, Subatomic Sound System as the official backing band of Lee Scratch Perry on all his North American and Canadian Live shows since 2009, including 2 appearances at the Coachella Festival 2013 and established Subatomic Sound System as an up to the time production unit, fusing old and new school Reggae & Bass Music elements.

The Dubblestandart album IN DUB (2014, Echo Beach) has been entirely remixed by Adrian Sherwood from On-U Sound Records London, UK. The album Return From Planet Dub also featured guest vocalist film director David Lynch on Chrome Optimism, a dub reggae adaptation of Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygen Part 4.

In 2016 their fifteenth album Dub Realistic was released on the German label Echo Beach, which was named after Martha and the Muffins song Echo Beach from 1979.The record label Echo Beach is based in Hamburg, Germany and was founded by Nicolai Beverungen who previously worked for Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound Records and African Head Charge or Zap Mama.

In 2017 Paul Zasky started to produce a studio album with Austrian singer song writer GuGabriel which was released in early 2019. During the Licht Ins Dunkel/Light Into Darkness NGO Campaign from the Austrian National Broadcasting corporation ORF in 2017 they both performed for the president of Austria Dr. Alexander Van De Bellen at his residency, the Vienna Hofburg.

The 2019 released album Dubblestandart & Firehouse Crew, Reggae Classics features Classic Reggae Songs from the 1980's of Burning Spear, Culture, Matumbi, Twinkle Brothers and Steel Pulse. The aim of the production is to throw a light on the deep and conscious content of early Reggae Music from the 1970s & 1980.The instrumentals for this album were produced with the legendary Firehouse Crew at Anchor Studios, Kingston Jamaica and then mixed at GoEast Studios Vienna on original analog Equipment. Robbie Ost, who is the owner of GoEast Studios was able to purchase a Solide State Mixing console E 6000 when opening the studio. This mixing board was originally used and owned by Tears For Fears during their production of the Sowing The Seeds Of Love production in London. UK 1989 and then bought and brought to Vienna, Austria in the late 1990s.
