Durastone can refer to a variety of proprietary stone-like materials used for either casting of decorative statues from plaster molds replicas, porcelain-like architectural or flooring tiles, granite-like bathroom appliances, or pre-cast highway construction materials.
Durastone is often described as trademarked, although it is unclear if all references use the same formulation. It has been described as a formulation of crushed stone mixed in a slurry, and is made using a double-loading process by pressing together two distinctive layers of clay that are then fired at a high temperature, forming one solid full-body tile or cast. The thin top layer makes up the true color and surface finish of the tile, requiring less pigment additives. Unlike natural stone and grout, it requires no sealants, and is thus impervious to water, bacteria, mold and mildew. It has similar characteristics to Tuffstone, another casting medium preferred for modern plaster statuary.
