Dylan and Dakota Jordan[1] Gonzalez (born December 9, 1994) are American social media personalities, basketball players, and singers. They gained popularity after both became the 2012 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year co-runner up as well as the 2012 all-area co-players of the year.[2]

Early life[edit]

Dylan and Dakota Jordan Gonzalez were born on December 9, 1994 in Overland Park, Kansas, the twin daughters of David and Angela Gonzalez.[3] Angela had a son, Conor Rauselbach, from her first marriage, and David had two children, Natalia and Javier, from his first marriage.[4] Angela was also former All-American honorable mention basketball selection for Kansas in 1984, before moving to play professional basketball in Germany later on.[2] The family later moved from Kansas to Colorado in 1996,[5] where they had two more children, Stefan and Gabriella "Gaby",[4][3] and where the twins later starred in the Baby Einstein video, Baby Shakespeare: World of Poetry.[5][6][lower-alpha 1]The family later moved to Pocatello, Idaho.

Career[edit]

The twins decided to follow in their mother's footsteps and began playing basketball at their high school, before graduating in 2013. They then decided to attend their mother's alma matter for college, University of Kansas, where they decided to play basketball.[7] In May 2014, after not doing as well as they were in high school at basketball, the sisters announced they would be transferring to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where they would also be pursuing the sport again.[8] Despite media backlash for leaving a bigger school for a smaller one, Dylan stated she had been fighting injuries for the majority of the basketball season; additionally, she also stated that the coaches at UNLV felt more family oriented.[9] Following their transfer, rapper Drake befriended them and often played basketball while alone with them.[10] In 2016, Dakota was rumored to have been dating him, and also the reason he split with the singer Rhianna, though it was never confirmed.[2] Later that, the twins began putting tracks out on SoundCloud, and began releasing an official song, Nobody Knows, under the name Dyl-Kota.[11] The NCAA did not approve of the twins making music while playing basketball, going so far as to forbid them from singing anything but The Star Spangled Banner. As a result, the twins announced in June 2017 that they would be leaving their basketball careers to pursue music.[12] They later rebranded themselves as D.a.D..[13]

Personal life[edit]

Both twins are still active on Instagram, both with over a million followers each.[14][15] They have released several other singles since their basketball careers ended.[16] Both still play basketball in their free time, and hope to one day receive Roster Spots on the Las Vegas Aces.[17] In 2020, the twins starred in the music video for Pop Smoke's song, Mood Swings.[18]

Notes[edit]

  1. Angie writes in a reply to a comment on this post, "we lived a block away from the creator of the Einstein dynasty.. we met at our swimming pool. Became friends & she asked the girls to be in it❤️," confirming that it was her daughters that were in Baby Einstein. Baby Einstein was founded and the videos were filmed in Colorado, confirming that they lived in Colorado at one point.
