Dystopia: How the Tyranny of Specialists Fragments African Cities is a 2020 polemical book by the city planner Archimedes Muzenda, published by the African Urban Institute. It argues that specialist approaches to urban development in Africa, and across the world, are fragmenting cities, turning them into dystopia.[1][2] He argues that the best way to create liveable cities is to adopt a generalist approach or rationalise specialist approaches through regulation.[3]

Synopsis

The book's 9 chapters are categorized by each group of specialists discussed. The Overture of the book sets the stage for the book's discussion by characterizing various groups of specialists and how the specialist approach differs from the generalist approach.[4] The other 7 chapters discuss each group of specialists one by one: town planning regulators, urban studies scholars,[5] traffic engineers, architects, environmentalists, and "right to the city" proponents. The book concludes with a chapter on how to rationalize all the specialists discussed towards a generalist approach and creating more liveable cities.
