E.P. is a six-track extended play by Mexican rock band Rey Pila, released on September 9, 2022, through Arts & Crafts México. The record includes the singles "Amygdalae" and "IQ Test," produced in collaboration with German electronic DJ and producer Boys Noize.[3] The release marked the band’s first new studio material following the COVID-19 pandemic, positioning it as a creative comeback after the postponement of touring plans for their previous album Velox Veritas.[1]
Background and release
The EP was quietly released with no press interviews or live shows. The band previewed the project with the singles "Amygdalae" and "IQ Test" in August 2022, showcasing a darker, guitar-driven sound with heavier electronic textures.[4] The songs were co-produced with Boys Noize[5], who introduced new programming and synth elements into the band’s palette. The EP was released digitally through Arts & Crafts México.[6]
Critical reception
E.P. was met with positive reviews in the Mexican press. Revista Marvin highlighted the group’s collaboration with Boys Noize as “a bold step into tenebrous electronic textures that retain the band’s rock urgency.”[1] IndieRocks! praised the contrast between the frenetic energy of "Amygdalae" and the slower, synth-heavy atmosphere of "IQ Test," noting it as a continuation of the cinematic qualities explored in Velox Veritas.[4] LINNE Magazine referred to the singles as “a creative resurgence” and emphasized the darker, more atmospheric character of the EP.[7]
