Work[edit]

Artwork produced by E. Jane addresses themes of identity and a range of topics from post-cyberfeminism to cyborg theory. E. Jane produces installations and albums under several identities and as one member of the duo, SCRAAATCH, alongside chukwumaa.

MHYSA[edit]

MHYSA is an alter ego of E. Jane. MHYSA is described by E. Jane as "an underground popstar for the cyber resistance."[1] E. Jane continues: "mostly we (E. Jane and Mhysa) work together in my studio, both taking turns in the creative process when we’re needed. Mhysa is more about music and feeling and making things that feel and E. Jane deals with the more institutional approaches and deconstructing them, whereas Mhysa doesn’t like to think about those spaces and would much rather think about nightlife." [2]

E. The Avatar[edit]

"E. The Avatar is a persona devised to ‘live’ in ‘cyberspace’, to hang out with humans. Sitting at an empty desk in a blank white room, E. The Avatar talks to the viewer about net neutrality and using Google Maps to travel the world." [3]

#mood exercises[edit]

In this series of video works the artist performs in Apple Photobooth. E. Jane cites Claudia Rankin's "The Meaning of Serena Williams: On Tennis and Black Excellence" as a catalyst for the work, which she further describes "as a way for me to think about, perform and record a range of physical and emotional gestures, which I feel is vital for me to do as a Black woman slave descendant, as recorded or acknowledged range of emotion and action is often denied to us by the popular imaginary." [4]

Exhibitions[edit]

E. Jane's solo exhibition, Lavendra was shown at the American Medium[5] gallery in New York City in 2017[6] and Glasgow International 2018 in Scotland[7]. The show was as an ode to black joy and the black diva through sci-fi mythology.
