ELLOYD (Album)

Elloyd (often stylized in all caps) is the eponymous debut album by American singer Elloyd. The album was released December 18, 2020, by Electra Edition Records. ELLOYD is primarily a pop album, but mixes hip-hop, R&B, and soul. The album is dubbed a sexual and sensual album lyrically, as songs like "Do Better", "Weekend Love", "Climax", and "XO" all deal with mature love content, while songs like "Paralyzed" deal with relationship issues. The album itself expresses a dark, yet sensual touch. The album is centered around the lead single "Reputation," as it sets the feel for the album, being the third track.

Upon release, no one knew of the album, nor a release date. The album is referred to as a "surprise album", or digital drop release, or surprise drop, because it was released without any prior warning or leakage to the public. The release avoided leakage by working with people under cover and sworn to secrecy. The album was released all at once at midnight on December 17, 2020, to all streaming stores such as iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, Google Play, and more. The album received 1,700 streams within the first three hours of its release. As of March 2021, the album has received over 18,100 streams on select streaming platforms.

Three singles were released from the ELLOYD album, all of which received more than 5,000 streams on Spotify. The lead single, "Reputation," was released on December 18, 2020. The second single on the ELLOYD album is "Do Better," which was released on December 17, 2020. The third and final single from the ELLOYD album is "XO," released on December 20, 2020.

Background and Recording

Elloyd's debut album was released December 18, 2020, as a "surprise" release. The surprise drop was always the plan, as Elloyd wanted to follow the style of Beyoncé and Drake, as he felt that he didn't want the album to be based solely on a single or three singles, but on the work and production of the album.

Production for the album started in May 2019. In the beginning, it started off as simple recording sessions; there was no style to the music, no specific theme, nor a release date. However, Elloyd made it very clear that he didn't want any leaks of any of the songs recorded during that short time period.

Production started to ease in by August 2019. Elloyd decided on a theme for the album and planned for it to be released in the early weeks of 2020, providing him with five months to work with a team to produce an album. During that time, Elloyd explained working on over 50 songs from August to December, plus 20 more from May to August, while still keeping everything heavily secret. In 2020, Elloyd changed the theme of his album again, but this time it was more drastic than usual; he ended up scrapping over 60 songs and wanted to make the album more representative of himself and other people who could relate to it. Not only did his theme change, but production also had to change due to the Coronavirus outbreak of 2020. Production went on a brief pause from March to mid-April. In April, Elloyd started back working on putting together the album and started recording again in July 2020 in The Hamptons. In the end, Elloyd ended up making over 110 songs from May 2019 to December 2020, all the while keeping it a secret, and only 11 songs made it onto the album.

Music and Lyrics

ELLOYD is lyrically acclaimed as a sexual masterpiece; however, the album offers a lot more than just that. The album is pop, with songs like "XO", "Famous Pains", and "Reputation," while the Hip-Hop and R&B style comes with "Do Better", "Climax", "Climax (Bonus Track)", and "Paralyzed". "Paralyzed" can also be considered "Alternative R&B". The album has also been considered trap, as the songs "Ghost" and "Weekend Love" are both heavily trap-influenced. The dark side of the album comes with songs like "Reputation" and "Ghost". Elloyd said the message behind the songs is very clear: "Reputation" talks about someone's past reputation haunting them, while the next track, "Ghost," features as an allusion to that haunting sensation. In "Reputation," Elloyd uses the words "Reputation's haunting me, Everybody's on to me," while in the next track, "Ghost," the lyrics are "I'm onto you," and sounds like an allusion to "I'm haunting you." Elloyd uses the dark theme for the feel of the album and even inspired the album cover and promotional pictures. Songs like "Climax" and "Do Better" are the sexual sounds of the album, as they both talk about sex and the act of having sexual intercourse. "Weekend Love" is a song that also adds a sexual touch to the album, as lyrically it talks about relationship issues, siding with "Paralyzed," but the lyrics in "Weekend Love" allude to the phrase "Weekend Love," meaning love that occurs on the weekends, with "Weakened Love," meaning love that is weakening due to problems in the relationship. The song "XO" was one that was changed throughout production because of the events that took place in 2020, along with the songs "Superpower" and "Paradise." These songs, aside from the rest of the album, talk about losing a loved one.

Release and Promotion

Not much promotion was undertaken for the ELLOYD album. Elloyd didn't provide any pre-hype for the album, as he wanted to keep it a secret. In November 2020, Elloyd released a series of images to his Instagram, all with the same theme of red LEDs. From the audience's standpoint, you wouldn't be able to tell what the pictures meant. On the midnight of December 17, 2020, Elloyd posted a video to his Instagram and Snapchat of a video with flashy lights and red bouncing colors in the background; snippets of each song on the album were played to reveal that it was now available on all stores. Elloyd has since taken to his social media to post more snippets of the songs along with a few visuals.
